Man Killed in Orlando Motorcycle Accident
A 48-year-old Ocoee motorcyclist was fatally injured in an Orlando motorcycle accident recently when a car turned left in front of him and another car ran him over. Florida Highway Patrol troopers report that the victim was traveling south on his Kawasaki on Edgewater Drive when a car driven by a 36-year-old Orlando woman turned left onto Webster Avenue. The woman made the turn directly in front of the victim, giving him no time to take evasive action. His motorcycle struck the passenger side of the woman’s car in the collision, throwing him from his motorcycle and onto Edgewater Drive, where he was run over and fatally injured by a Hyundai driven by a 48-year-old Orlando woman.
Police Officer Injured in Florida Dog Bite Attack
An officer with the Palm Bay Police Department suffered a dog bite that required stitches recently when he assisted an elderly woman who called police after the dog would not leave her garage. Officer Phil Erwin responded to a call at a house on Eatonia Street and found a 120-pound pit bull in the woman’s garage. The dog belonged to the woman’s neighbor, but she found that local Animal Control officials would not come to her home unless it was restrained, leading to the police call. When the officer arrived, the dog was not behaving aggressively, but it refused to leave the premises.
Two Men Killed in Separate Florida Pedestrian Accidents on Thanksgiving
Two men were struck and killed in separate pedestrian accidents in Ocala on Thanksgiving Day. The first accident occurred at 1:15 a.m. that morning when a man trying to cross the intersection of South Pine Avenue and Southwest 10th Street was struck and killed in the crosswalk by a hit-and-run driver. One witness told Ocala police officers that she saw the victim running southbound on the crosswalk when he was struck by an eastbound driver who sped away from the scene. The victim was a 23-year-old Ocala college student who was home visiting family for the holiday.
Teacher Injured in Orlando Auto Accident
A 33-year-old Evans High science teacher suffered injuries when her Jeep was struck by a stolen vehicle carrying three teens. Police report that the 17-year-old driver of the stolen Mitsubishi ran a red light and struck the teacher’s Jeep Liberty on the passenger side. The accident occurred around 7 a.m. on Nov. 26 near the high school at the intersection of Silver Star Road and Kingsland Avenue.
Update on Fungal Meningitis Outbreak From Contaminated Medication
Here is an update on the fungal meningitis outbreak that has killed at least 31 people across the country and sickened hundreds more. Orlando personal injury attorney James O. Around 1,000 Floridians who received the contaminated steroids at clinics around our state are at risk for developing this potentially deadly disease. The tainted samples of methylprednisolone acetate, a steroid often prescribed for pain relief, came from the New England Compounding Center in Massachusetts, and all vials of the drug have been recalled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Intrepid Bicyclist Experiences His Own “Horrible” Bike Ride
The only bicyclist to participate in all 33 “Horrible Hundred Bike Rides” across Lake County nearly had his streak broken recently when he had his own horrible bike ride early this month. Stephen Rooks is a 56-year-old Cocoa Beach resident and an avid bicyclist who was involved in a serious bicycle accident when a driver failed to yield the right of way and turned directly in front of him. The driver was turning into her driveway and claims that she didn’t see the rider when she caused the accident that broke Rooks’ left clavicle and three ribs and destroyed his beloved bike.
Florida Police Looking for Witnesses in Multi-Car Crash That Killed Motorcyclist
St. Cloud police officers are asking for help from anyone who may have witnessed a four-vehicle accident on Highway 192 that killed a motorcyclist. Police say that the accident occurred on Oct. 15 around 3:20 p.m. and involved two sport utility vehicles and two motorcycles. The accident killed a 54-year-old Barefoot Bay man who was operating one of the motorcycles when the accident occurred. The accident closed Highway 192 near Oregon Avenue for nearly nine hours as police conducted their investigation and debris was cleared from the crash site.
Florida Nursing Home Worker Facing Charges in Financial Elder Abuse Case
A nursing home worker in police custody faces several charges in connection with stealing a credit card from one of her patients at the Indigo Palms assisted living facility in Maitland. The woman is accused of using her position at the facility to steal from elderly patients. Police say that she broke into a patient’s room, stole her credit card and went on a shopping spree to buy clothing, office supplies, two cellphones and a family cellphone plan. Police report that she was still in her work scrubs when she was booked into jail.
Florida Officers Wear Costumes to Catch Speeders and Other Violators
Law enforcement agencies throughout Florida recently used some very unorthodox tactics to catch drivers disobeying the rules of the road. Officers dressed as leprechauns, prostitutes, elves, vagrants, political protesters, tourists, golfers and in other garb besides their usual uniforms positioned themselves at intersections and along busy roadways in sting operations that were very successful.
Generators Recalled for Fire Risk
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently announced a recall affecting two models of Champion Power Equipment portable generators sold at Costco stores due to fire hazards. The CPSC issued the recalls due to fuel leaks from some carburetors posing a serious fire risk. Both Champion Power Equipment models affected by the recall feature a back frame with yellow and black control panels, a bar handle and two wheels. Costco estimates that around 8,600 of the faulty generators have been sold exclusively at their stores throughout the U.S. from December 2011 through July 2012 for around $699. The models affected by the recall include number 41332 and number 41532.
