Daytona Beach Pedestrian Killed in Multi-Vehicle Collision on I-95
Authorities with the Florida Highway Patrol operating within Volusia County are currently working to determine the identity of a male pedestrian who was struck and killed early this past Saturday morning along Interstate 95 near the LPGA Boulevard exit in Daytona Beach.
According to investigators with the Florida Highway Patrol, it was shortly before 6 a.m. on July 24, 2021, when Volusia County 9-1-1 dispatchers received a call from a concerned motorist who was driving down I-95 by mile marker 263 close to the the LPGA Boulevard off-ramp when she unexpectedly collided with a male pedestrian standing in the middle of the interstate. Following this initial auto accident, at least two more drivers called the police to report a similar crash with the same victim in the same vicinity. “We believe several other vehicles also ran him over. There are parts of that person all over the interstate, so that’s why we had to close it,” said FHP Lt. Kim Montes in a press release.
Due to the severe nature of the victim’s injuries, officers with the Florida Highway Patrol are having difficulties with the identification of the pedestrian. It is unclear at this time if the motorists involved in this fatal accident will face any legal charges as officers have only been able to interview one driver: a 30-year-old from Jacksonville.
Accidents involving a motor vehicle vs. a pedestrian are a far too common occurrence here in the state of Florida, although collisions involving a person walking along the interstate, especially I-95, are pretty rare. It’s quite possible that the victim’s vehicle had sustained some sort of malfunction along the roadway and he was attempting to find help, or perhaps the pedestrian himself suffered a medical episode and was disoriented by his surroundings. This is all merely speculation, of course, until the Florida Highway Patrol determines the actual cause behind the gruesome collision.
