Sanford Man Killed by Car While Walking on Winter Garden Sidewalk
Officials in Orange County are currently investigating the death of a pedestrian who was struck and killed by an out-of-control vehicle earlier this morning along Wild Blackberry Trail in Winter Garden.
Early auto accident details from the Florida Highway Patrol working in Orange County indicate that it was approximately 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 8, 2023, when a 22-year-old man from Oviedo was driving a 2012 Toyota Camry in the eastbound direction of Wild Blackberry Trail. According to witness statements retrieved by Lt. Tara Crescenzi with the Florida Highway Patrol, the 22-year-old driver was allegedly driving well above the posted legal limit as he approached an upcoming curve near the intersection of Wild Blackberry Trail and Avenue of the Rushes.
He failed to properly maneuver this turn and veered off the roadway to the right, striking a mailbox, electrical pole, and a tree before slamming into a 71-year-old pedestrian from Sanford who was standing on the sidewalk. The Toyota’s devastating collision course finally ended when the sedan-style vehicle crashed through the front porch of a residence in the Horizon West neighborhood.
“There was a mom with a baby on the porch that he hit and the one post stopped him from going up into her. I just think about my wife and I and people walk around here all the time and how it could have been, even though it was one person, he could have killed multiple people,” said Mark Meyers, who was in the area and started running toward the crash site to help.
Several local law enforcement agencies were dispatched to the scene of the pedestrian accident, but despite their quick arrival, the 71-year-old Sanford man sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead. The 22-year-old driver of the Toyota was transported to a nearby hospital with severe injuries. His condition is unknown at this time.
This fatal incident is under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. Further information is expected to be released at the conclusion of the case.
