Pedestrian Struck and Killed During Collision in Winter Park
As more and more travellers take to the Florida roadways this holiday season to visit their friends and families, statewide officials are already seeing a slight increase in the amount of auto accidents resulting in fatal injuries. One such instance sadly occurred earlier this week after a pedestrian was struck and killed near Semoran Boulevard in Winter Park.
According to preliminary collision details from the responding troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol in Orange County, it was right after the local evening rush hour on Tuesday, December 6, 2022, when officers were first notified of a car vs. pedestrian accident potentially involving life-threatening injuries close to the intersection of North Semoran Boulevard and Aloma Avenue in Winter Park.
Early crash reports from the Florida Highway Patrol indicate that around 7 p.m., a yet-to-be-identified male was walking along Semoran Boulevard and decided to cross the street from west to east outside of any designated crosswalk safety zones. As the pedestrian reached the street’s median, something caused the man to stop. At this same time, a 19-year-old Winter Park resident entered the same area driving a black Kia Optima. For reasons that are currently unknown, the pedestrian left the median and stepped into the oncoming path of the Kia Optima. The teenager was unable to avoid a collision with the man and crashed into the pedestrian.
Orange County emergency response teams and the Florida Highway Patrol arrived at the scene of the accident shortly after it took place and immediately transported the severely injured pedestrian to AdventHealth Winter Park. He did not survive.
The 19-year-old driver of the black Kia Optima remained at the crash site and was said to be in full cooperation with the Florida Highway Patrol.
The intersection of Aloma Avenue and North Semoran Boulevard was closed for several hours while the crash site was investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol. No further information has been released at this time.
