New Study Shows Bike Helmets Save Kids’ Lives in Bicycle Accidents
Bicycle accident attorneys have always encouraged parents to insist that their children wear helmets when riding their bikes to protect them when they wipe out or are struck by motorized vehicles. A recent study conducted by the Journal of Pediatrics clearly shows how important helmets are in saving kids lives. The objective of the study was to determine the correlation between bicycle helmet laws and bicycle accident-related deaths sustained by children struck by cars. Florida has a bike helmet law on the books, but parents don’t always enforce it with their kids.
Proposed Bike Trail Would Allow Bicyclists to Ride From Coast to Coast
Florida bicyclists who have long dreamed of being able to ride from the Atlantic coast to the Gulf coast may see their dream become a reality thanks to the Florida Legislature. In a move that delighted Orlando bicycle accident lawyers, Florida lawmakers recently passed a budget that includes $50 million to create a 275-mile "Coast to Coast Connector" bike path. The funds would allow the state to fill gaps between existing trails from Canaveral National Seashore on the east coast to St. Petersburg on the west. Here in Central Florida, the trail would pass through parts of Lake, Orange, Seminole, Volusia and Brevard counties.
Oviedo Woman Killed in Central Florida Bicycle Accident
A 77-year-old Oviedo woman was fatally injured recently in a bicycle accident near Winter Springs. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the woman was struck by a van while crossing Tuskawilla Road at Willa Springs Drive. Troopers report that the victim was struck around 11:30 a.m. and died from her injuries at the scene of the accident. The driver of the van and her three passengers were uninjured in the accident. Troopers have not yet determined whether or not they will press charges against the driver.
Florida Woman Killed in Hit-and-Run Bicycle Accident
Daytona Beach police are looking for the driver of a sports utility vehicle who struck and killed a 22-year-old Daytona Beach woman on Jan. 30. Accident investigators report that the accident occurred at the intersection of International Speedway Boulevard and South Oleander Avenue around 2:15 a.m. The victim was riding her bike westbound in the outside lane of International Speedway Boulevard when she was struck from behind by a Nissan SUV. Police say that the driver of the Nissan made no attempt to stop after colliding with the bicyclist and that the impact threw her from her bicycle. The SUV was last seen heading westbound over the International Speedway Boulevard Bridge.
Bicyclist Struck and Killed in Geneva
Bicycle accident attorneys in Central Florida are alarmed at a recent spike in fatal bicycle accidents. Florida Highway Patrol troopers report that a 31-year-old Geneva man was killed recently when he was struck by the side mirror of a pickup truck. The accident occurred around 6:30 a.m. as the victim was riding his bike westbound on Aloma Avenue near Seminole Woods Boulevard in Geneva. Troopers report that he was truck by the passenger side rear-view mirror of a Chevrolet pickup, which knocked him off his bike and onto the pavement. He was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. The 50-year-old driver of the truck was not injured in the crash, and troopers report that charges may be filed pending the results of their investigation.
Orlando Police Crack Down on Drivers Who Fail to Yield to Pedestrians
Law enforcement officials in Central Florida are tired of our area’s reputation for pedestrian accidents. More than 8,000 people are injured in pedestrian accidents in our state every year, and regular readers of this blog know that the Orlando metropolitan area is among the most dangerous places for these accidents in the country. Last summer, this blog featured a post about a joint effort between Orlando Police and Orange County Sheriff’s Office called “Operation Best Foot Forward.” When the new program began last June, officers and sheriff’s deputies began handing out warnings to drivers who failed to yield to pedestrians.
Intrepid Bicyclist Experiences His Own “Horrible” Bike Ride
The only bicyclist to participate in all 33 “Horrible Hundred Bike Rides” across Lake County nearly had his streak broken recently when he had his own horrible bike ride early this month. Stephen Rooks is a 56-year-old Cocoa Beach resident and an avid bicyclist who was involved in a serious bicycle accident when a driver failed to yield the right of way and turned directly in front of him. The driver was turning into her driveway and claims that she didn’t see the rider when she caused the accident that broke Rooks’ left clavicle and three ribs and destroyed his beloved bike.
Troopers Need Help in Fatal Orlando Hit-and-Run Bicycle Accident
Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers are looking for the driver of a white sports utility vehicle that witnesses say struck and killed a bicyclist after 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 29. The victim was a 55-year-old Orlando man who was riding his bike near the intersection of State Road 50 and Forsyth Road when he was fatally injured. According to the FHP accident report, the victim was riding his bike north on Forsyth Road where it intersects with SR-50 as the white SUV and a 2007 Hyundai driven by a 34-year-old Orlando man waited at a red light. Troopers report that, when the light turned green, the two cars entered the intersection and the victim rode into their path.
Suspect in Fatal Florida Bicycle Accident May Have Been Driving While Impaired
Florida Highway Patrol troopers investigating a fatal hit-and-run bicycle accident in Avalon Park say that the 18-year-old man they arrested in connection with the accident was under the influence of synthetic marijuana when he struck and killed the 53-year-old victim. Troopers recently arrested the man on charges of fleeing the scene of a fatal accident, and he was booked into the Orange County Jail after submitting blood for testing at Florida Hospital. They say that the man was under the influence of drugs, possibly synthetic marijuana, when he struck and killed the bicyclist on Avalon Park Boulevard, near Tea Rose Drive.
Florida Man Struck and Killed in Deadly Bicycle Accident
A recent bicycle accident has claimed the life of a 52-year-old man, who was struck and killed by a SUV while riding on Old Cheney Highway near State Road 50. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) investigation is still underway, but troopers report that the man was struck by a 2002 Ford SUV driven by a 19-year-old man. Troopers say the driver was eastbound on S.R. 50 when he attempted to make a right turn onto Old Cheney Highway. The driver told troopers that he lost control of the steering wheel while making the turn and struck the bicyclist. A FHP spokesperson told reporters that charges are pending against the driver and will be announced when the investigation is complete. The bicyclist suffered massive head injuries and died at the scene of the accident.
