Troopers Need Help in Fatal Orlando Hit-and-Run Bicycle Accident
Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers are looking for the driver of a white sports utility vehicle that witnesses say struck and killed a bicyclist after 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 29. The victim was a 55-year-old Orlando man who was riding his bike near the intersection of State Road 50 and Forsyth Road when he was fatally injured. According to the FHP accident report, the victim was riding his bike north on Forsyth Road where it intersects with SR-50 as the white SUV and a 2007 Hyundai driven by a 34-year-old Orlando man waited at a red light. Troopers report that, when the light turned green, the two cars entered the intersection and the victim rode into their path.
They say the bicyclist was struck by both cars, but only the driver of the Hyundai stopped to help the injured rider. The driver of the white SUV fled from the accident scene, and troopers are asking anyone who may know anything about the SUV or the driver to contact them at 800-423-TIPS.
Regular readers of this blog know that a bicycle accident caused by a reckless bicyclist is quite rare. The vast majority of collisions involving bikes and motor vehicles are caused by negligent drivers who pull out in front of riders or otherwise violate their right of way. A proper helmet, reflective clothing and other safety equipment offer little protection for bikers when they are struck by a vehicle weighing thousands of pounds. They often suffer catastrophic injuries, such as these:
- Massive head and brain injuries
- Compound bone fractures
- Crushed limbs
- Punctured lungs
- Lacerated internal organs
- Neck and spine injuries
- Other serious injuries that impact their quality of life
Bicyclists who are injured by negligent motorists have a right to seek damages against them to help pay medical bills, compensate them for pain and suffering, replace lost wages and other damages. While bicycle accident victims and their families focus on recovery, they need an effective and experienced Orlando bicycle accident lawyer protecting their rights and looking out for their best interests.
