Florida Man Struck and Killed in Deadly Bicycle Accident
A recent bicycle accident has claimed the life of a 52-year-old man, who was struck and killed by a SUV while riding on Old Cheney Highway near State Road 50. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) investigation is still underway, but troopers report that the man was struck by a 2002 Ford SUV driven by a 19-year-old man. Troopers say the driver was eastbound on S.R. 50 when he attempted to make a right turn onto Old Cheney Highway. The driver told troopers that he lost control of the steering wheel while making the turn and struck the bicyclist. A FHP spokesperson told reporters that charges are pending against the driver and will be announced when the investigation is complete. The bicyclist suffered massive head injuries and died at the scene of the accident.
Regular readers of this blog know that our area is one of the most dangerous in the country for bicyclists year after year. Troopers have not yet announced why the driver lost control of his vehicle while trying to turn, but many bicycle accidents here in Orange County and throughout Florida involve one or more of the following types of negligence:
- Road rage
- Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Talking or texting on a cell phone while driving
- Driving too fast for conditions
- Violating a rider’s right of way
- Running a red light
- Speeding
- Tailgating
- Deliberately attempting to intimidate a rider
If you are a bicyclist who has suffered an injury in a bicycle accident, you have a right to seek damages against the person who caused the accident. In most cases, the party at fault is the driver of an automobile. However, motorcyclists and bicyclists who cause accidents can also be liable for the damages they cause.
