Bicyclist Struck and Killed in Geneva
Bicycle accident attorneys in Central Florida are alarmed at a recent spike in fatal bicycle accidents. Florida Highway Patrol troopers report that a 31-year-old Geneva man was killed recently when he was struck by the side mirror of a pickup truck. The accident occurred around 6:30 a.m. as the victim was riding his bike westbound on Aloma Avenue near Seminole Woods Boulevard in Geneva. Troopers report that he was truck by the passenger side rear-view mirror of a Chevrolet pickup, which knocked him off his bike and onto the pavement. He was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. The 50-year-old driver of the truck was not injured in the crash, and troopers report that charges may be filed pending the results of their investigation.
Even when wearing proper protective gear, bicyclists have little protection against being struck by a vehicle weighing many thousands of pounds. Even something as seemingly inconsequential as the side mirror of a vehicle can cause massive trauma, such as these:
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Neck and spine injuries
- Bone fractures
- Deep lacerations
- Ruptured internal organs
- Facial disfigurement
- Many more serious, life-changing injuries
Many bicycle accident victims face a long, painful and very expensive road to recovery, including multiple surgeries, lengthy hospital stays and physical rehabilitation regimens to regain as much of their independence and quality of life as possible. This treatment often results in medical bills that quickly climb into the tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars, adding financial distress to the victim’s considerable physical and emotional injuries.
