Passenger Ejected During a Guardrail Crash on I-4 in Daytona Beach
Preliminary collision reports from troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol working within Volusia County indicate that one passenger suffered fatal injuries over the weekend after they were ejected from a pickup truck during an accident with a guardrail on Interstate 4 outside Daytona Beach.
According to officers with the Florida Highway Patrol, it was approximately 7:45 p.m. on Friday, March 18, 2022, when a pickup truck transporting a 21-year-old man from Palm Coast and his male passenger were traveling in the eastbound direction of I-4 in Volusia County. As their vehicle approached the vicinity of mile marker 131, the Palm Coast driver attempted to maneuver his truck from the center lane into the left lane of the interstate and in doing so, failed to notice a sedan that was already occupying that position on the road and collided with the vehicle.
The impact from the initial accident with the sedan was so strong that it propelled the pickup truck into a nearby guardrail along I-4. The force from the second collision with the guardrail caused the pickup to overturn and eject the truck’s passenger, who was sadly not wearing a seatbelt at the time. He sustained life-threatening injuries during the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. The 21-year-old driver of the pickup truck and the 40-year-old Daytona Beach man driving the sedan both suffered minor injuries during the incident. Both men were wearing their safety belts when the accident occurred.
Additionally, three other vehicles were involved in minor fender-benders near the scene of the accident while trying to avoid the yet-to-be-identified passenger that had been thrown from the pickup truck. No one was seriously injured during the second set of collisions.
This fatal auto accident is currently under investigation by authorities with the Florida Highway Patrol. Further details surrounding the collision are expected to be released pending the outcome of the case.
