Twenty Injured After Car Crashes Through Broward County Restaurant
Two dozen people sustained a variety of injuries last Friday evening when an out-of-control car crashed through a local restaurant in Plantation, according to early reports from Broward County authorities.
Preliminary details surrounding this incident indicate that it was approximately 6:35 p.m. on August 18, 2023, when several patrons were enjoying dinner at Thai Meal, located in Jacaranda Plaza at 8257 W. Sunrise Boulevard in Plantation. Officers with the Plantation Police Department state that a yet-to-be-publicly-identified woman driving a red Nissan Altima entered the shopping center and tried to park at the restaurant, but instead drove through the front glass windows of the popular establishment.
“There was a lot of screaming. There was a lot of shouting. Everybody was trying to see if there was anybody under the car. I got shoved to the side and my wife got shoved with the rest of the tables,” said Angel Soler, who was eating inside the restaurant when the auto accident occurred.
Medical teams and first responders with the Plantation Fire Rescue and the Plantation Police Department were dispatched to the scene of the accident. Upon their arrival, they began tagging injured victims based on the severity of their traumas, utilizing the parking lot as a makeshift triage center. In total, twenty people sustained injuries, and twelve of those individuals were transported to nearby hospitals for further treatment including two pregnant women.
It is unclear if the driver of the Nissan Altima was injured during the collision or what exactly caused the crash in the first place. This case is currently under investigation by Broward County officials.
Auto accidents such as these may appear to be “open & shut” cases on the surface, however, it is quite possible that the driver of the vehicle suffered a medical episode shortly before the collision, or the car itself sustained a mechanical malfunction which subsequently caused her to lose control. These details will officially be ironed out once the investigation has concluded.
