Orlando Boat Dealer Sentenced in Fatal DUI Boating Accident
An Orlando boat dealer accused of operating a boat while under the influence of alcohol and causing a boating accident that killed a 20-year-old woman and injured several other people has been sentenced to spend the next six years in a Florida prison. The accident occurred on Lake Irma in east Orange County in July 2006 and fatally injured a former Amateur Athletic Union basketball star. The State Attorney’s Office reported that the 51-year-old dealer pleaded guilty to several charges in connection with the accident and received his sentence in a recent hearing.
Troopers Need Help in Fatal Orlando Hit-and-Run Bicycle Accident
Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers are looking for the driver of a white sports utility vehicle that witnesses say struck and killed a bicyclist after 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 29. The victim was a 55-year-old Orlando man who was riding his bike near the intersection of State Road 50 and Forsyth Road when he was fatally injured. According to the FHP accident report, the victim was riding his bike north on Forsyth Road where it intersects with SR-50 as the white SUV and a 2007 Hyundai driven by a 34-year-old Orlando man waited at a red light. Troopers report that, when the light turned green, the two cars entered the intersection and the victim rode into their path.
Florida Man Struck and Killed in Deadly Bicycle Accident
A recent bicycle accident has claimed the life of a 52-year-old man, who was struck and killed by a SUV while riding on Old Cheney Highway near State Road 50. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) investigation is still underway, but troopers report that the man was struck by a 2002 Ford SUV driven by a 19-year-old man. Troopers say the driver was eastbound on S.R. 50 when he attempted to make a right turn onto Old Cheney Highway. The driver told troopers that he lost control of the steering wheel while making the turn and struck the bicyclist. A FHP spokesperson told reporters that charges are pending against the driver and will be announced when the investigation is complete. The bicyclist suffered massive head injuries and died at the scene of the accident.
OPD Adds Cameras and Radar Equipment to Cars in DUI Crackdown
In a move fully endorsed by Orlando personal injury lawyers, the Orlando Police Department has announced that they are adding ten specially equipped police cars to their fleet to combat drunk driving in our area. The new cars feature several different tools to detect and apprehend drunk drivers, including in-car radar systems, dashboard cameras, back seat cameras and other equipment designed for the department’s DUI Enforcement Team.
Aggressive Driving Caused Fatal Florida Three-Car Accident On I-95
Florida Highway Patrol accident investigators released their preliminary report in connection with a recent three-car accident that killed a Sunrise man and closed a section of Interstate 95 for four hours. They say that the victim was a passenger in a 1999 Isuzu Rodeo driven by a 45-year-old Sunrise man. Troopers say that the Isuzu was traveling southbound on I-95 when the driver attempted to pass a 2002 Ford Mustang on the right shoulder of the road. When the driver attempted to pull back onto I-95 from the shoulder, he struck the front of the Mustang and lost control of his vehicle.
Child Electrocuted at Miniature Golf Course in Florida
The Orange-Osceola Medical Examiner recently issued a ruling in the death of an 11-year-old girl from Latham, NY, at a southwest Orange County miniature golf course. The autopsy revealed that the child was accidentally electrocuted when she reached into a small pond to retrieve a golf ball. The girl was playing mini golf around 2 p.m. at the Orange Lake Resort on Irlo Bronson Highway when her ball went into a small concrete pond around two feet deep. She cried out after reaching into the water but was unable to pull herself back out.
Florida Man Files Medical Malpractice Suit After Surgical Fire
A Florida man recently filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against NCH Downtown Naples Hospital after he was seriously injured by a surgical fire while undergoing pacemaker surgery. The man had his pacemaker surgically implanted on March 19, 2008. When he woke up after the surgery, he discovered second-degree burns all over his chest, neck and one shoulder. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), around 650 people are injured each year in surgical fires, a relatively unknown but potentially deadly and disfiguring risk in the surgical wards of hospitals.
Report Criticizes FHP Troopers’ Actions in Tragic I-75 Accident That Killed Eleven
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) recently issued a report that was sharply critical of Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers’ actions in the aftermath of a deadly chain reaction accident on Interstate 75 in January. Shortly after the accident, troopers were the targets of much criticism for reopening I-75 even though large portions were blanketed with fog and smoke from a nearby wildfire. In the April report, the FDLE criticized troopers directly for how they handled the situation and their judgment for reopening the interstate.
Orlando Wrongful Death: Boy Dies of Methadone Overdose
A 32-year-old Holly Hill man is facing murder charges after a 14-year-old boy died from a methadone overdose after finding the drug in the trash. The Volusia County State Attorney’s Office recently issued an indictment for the man for first-degree murder and a felony charge of delivering a controlled substance to a minor in connection with the boy’s death. The man is accused of driving the victim and another 17-year-old minor to Whitney Labs near Ormond Beach on Highway 1 early on the morning of May 24 and showing the boys how to find methadone the company has discarded in a dumpster.
