Teenager Perishes in Baker County Bicycle Accident
A 17-year-old boy has died in Baker County, the result of an auto accident that occurred Monday night. The police department indicates that the boy was riding his bike after dark near the Lee and Baker Mobile Home Park on North Boulevard West. A 2001 Dodge Ram was traveling westbound on North Boulevard West when the bicycle appeared in the roadway heading southbound out of the mobile home park. The driver of the truck reported to authorities that he tried to swerve to avoid the boy on the bicycle, but could not in time, and struck the teenager in his side. The force of the collision launched the boy off of the bike and he came to rest on the pavement.
Sky Train Derailment Injures Maintenance Worker in Miami
One of the Sky Train’s at Miami’s International Airport derailed early Tuesday morning, December 22nd, sending one car onto the roof of Concourse D and another off the end of the track. A maintenance worker who was aboard the train during the 2 a.m. maintenance run was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and was subsequently released. By late Tuesday afternoon, the cars had been removed from the roof of the concourse, but no timeline was in place to reopen Sky Train service. Thousands of airport travelers were forced to negotiate the concourse on foot, a task that can take upwards of twenty minutes during peak times.
Florida Man Crashes Car into Strip Mall
A Florida man crashed his Dodge Challenger into a strip mall in Pensacola on the morning of December 20th. Pensacola police report that the man, whose name has not yet been released, told police that he wanted to "time travel" much like in the popular movie "Back to the Future." The Challenger crashed through the front door of Advance Tax Services, traveled through the building and came to rest just short of the building’s rear entrance. No one was in the building at the time of the incident as it occurred on a weekend.
Two Vehicle Crash Kills Teen in Lake Placid
A 15-year-old Lake Placid teenager was killed last weekend when the go-cart he was driving collided with a 2005 Chevy Impala at about 12:50 am on Highlands Boulevard. The driver of the go-cart was traveling northbound and the Impala was southbound on Highlands when the Impala entered the opposing lane to pass traffic. The driver of the Impala could not see the go-cart because it did not have lighting attached and sits very low to the ground. The impact sent the go-cart into a spin into the northbound lane where it came to rest on the east shoulder. Paramedics pronounced the teen dead at the scene. No one in the Impala suffered any injuries.
Blown Tire Causes Fatal Wreck on Interstate 75
A dump truck traveling southbound on Interstate 75 caused a multi-vehicle accident that killed one person and injured others in Pasco County. The Florida Highway Patrol reported that the dump truck blew a tire just north of State Road 52. When the driver’s side front tire blew out, the driver was unable to maintain control of the vehicle. The dump truck veered sharply right and hit a 1998 Ford Van that was traveling in the lane immediately left of the truck, before turning over and striking the median. Another dump truck that had been traveling behind the previous truck also slammed into the overturned dump truck.
Florida Construction Worker Killed in High-Rise Accident
A 29-year-old construction worker was killed Wednesday, December 2nd, when a piece of equipment that was being hoisted in the air broke and fell on him. The man was working on the 37th floor of the Biscayne Beach condo resort in Miami’s Edgewater Neighborhood. Witnesses to the accident report that the man suffered serious injuries from the equipment when it fell and he perished shortly thereafter. Although co-workers rushed to help him, the elevator in the high rise building does not yet operate to the 37th floor and the location is only accessible by stairs.
Passenger Perishes in Florida Turnpike Rollover Crash
A mid-day SUV rollover accident at the corner of U.S. Highway 1 and Fischer Street in Stuart has left one man dead and four others injured. Three people, including the deceased, were traveling southbound on U.S. 1 in a silver Honda CR-V when they attempted to make a left hand turn onto Fischer Street. The CR-V turned into the path of a Chevy Tahoe traveling northbound on U.S. 1. The Tahoe struck the CR-V in the passenger side, flipping it over onto its top. The CR-V continued to slide across the intersection before coming to rest against a pole.
Man Killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash Involving Tractor-Trailer
In an unfortunate accident on I-10 on the night of Thursday, November 19th, a multi-vehicle accident involving a semi-truck led to one fatality. The crash, which happened around 6 p.m. that evening, created a significant backup in traffic. In fact, all eastbound lanes of the interstate were blocked off for several hours, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The accident occurred in Jacksonville around Chaffee Road, causing drivers to be detoured onto U.S. 90 during the extended road closure. Traffic eventually resumed as normal, after all victims were addressed and the lanes could be cleared by authorities.
Two-Vehicle Crash Leads to Construction Worker Being Hit by Truck
On the evening of Thursday, November 19, 2015, an unusual two-vehicle accident occurred in Yulee which caused a pedestrian construction worker to be hit and pinned under one of the vehicles. The worker, who was on the job with others at a construction site just east of U.S. 17 at the time of the crash, was essentially run over by a pickup truck after its driver says he was rear-ended by a semi-truck.
Five Students Injured in Highway School Bus Crash
On the morning of November 18th, 2015, a school bus carrying 11 children was involved in a serious bus crash on I-95 near International Golf Parkway. Not only was the incident traumatic, but 5 children were actually injured in the event – one quite seriously. Parents and community members were shocked by the news of the crash, and several parents have spoken out and declared that the bus should never have been on the highway in the first place.
