Passenger Perishes in Florida Turnpike Rollover Crash

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on December 15, 2015

A mid-day SUV rollover accident at the corner of U.S. Highway 1 and Fischer Street in Stuart has left one man dead and four others injured. Three people, including the deceased, were traveling southbound on U.S. 1 in a silver Honda CR-V when they attempted to make a left hand turn onto Fischer Street. The CR-V turned into the path of a Chevy Tahoe traveling northbound on U.S. 1. The Tahoe struck the CR-V in the passenger side, flipping it over onto its top. The CR-V continued to slide across the intersection before coming to rest against a pole.

The front seat passenger in the CR-V, an 80-year-old Stuart man, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the CR-V and a female passenger were both taken to area hospitals with serious injuries. The driver of the Tahoe and his female passenger were also taken to area hospitals. Their injuries were described as minor by the Florida Highway Patrol.

This latest accident brings the total number of accidents in Martin County to 29 for 2015. This is a 70% increase in the number of traffic deaths in the county over 2014, when the total number of traffic fatalities for the year was 17. Local officials are concerned about the increase.

According to local residents, they believe the increase is due to an increase in aggressive driving behavior on Florida streets. They see many drivers running red lights, cutting off other drivers and engaging in other dangerous behaviors on many residential streets. While many of these behaviors are illegal, it doesn’t deter some drivers from taking a chance. Emotions and stress tend to make many drivers engage in activities that they normally never would if they were in a calm state of mind. Tuesday’s accident is a stark reminder of what can happen if impatience and emotion take control, even for a split second.
