Clermont Announces Plans to Install Red Light Cameras at 13 Intersections
Florida lawmakers may be getting ready to ban red light cameras across our state, but many communities are continuing plans to install new cameras at problem intersections. The Central Florida town of Clermont is the most recent community to announce plans to install the devices. City officials recently announced that they would be adding these devices at 13 intersections along State Road 50 and U.S. Highway 27 to prevent accidents and discourage drivers from disobeying traffic signals.
Florida Motorcyclist Killed in Head-On Motorcycle Accident With Car
Florida Highway Patrol troopers investigating a fatal head-on collision between a motorcycle and a car say that the motorcyclist was talking on his cell phone when he lost control on a curve and struck the car. The accident occurred very early in the morning on Jan. 9, on Chase Road near Jack Nicklaus Parkway in Orange County. Troopers report that the victim, a 40-year-old Winter Garden man, was ejected from his Honda motorcycle by the collision and was pronounced dead from his injuries at the scene of the accident.
Ocoee Police to Add Three More Red Light Cameras
Ocoee city commissioners have voted to allow the installation of three additional red light cameras after police showed them that the cameras can be used to solve other crimes besides drivers disobeying a traffic signal. Ocoee Police used footage from a camera already in place to help solve a recent homicide and received permission to place red light cameras at three busy intersections: westbound State Road 50 and Blackwood Avenue; westbound S.R. 50 and Maguire Road; and eastbound Silver Star Road and Clarke Road.
Police Plan Aggressive Holiday Weekend DUI Patrols on Orlando Streets
Anyone thinking of drinking and driving on the weekend before New Year’s Eve as well as the big night better reconsider the potential consequences. A team of specialized police officers will be cruising Orlando streets looking for drunk drivers in the final weekend of 2012. The Orlando Police Department’s DUI unit patrols area roadways every Thursday and Friday night on the lookout for drivers under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and, unfortunately, there is always a steady supply of intoxicated drivers.
New Florida PIP Law Could Make it Tougher for Injured People to Receive Compensation
Revisions to a current law scheduled to go into effect on Jan. 1, 2013, have James O. Cunningham and other Orlando personal injury lawyers very concerned about the impact they could have on injured people getting the fair and just compensation they deserve from negligent drivers. Under the current law, all drivers are required to purchase Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance, which helps ensure that anyone injured in an auto accident will have some coverage for medical bills whether they were at fault for causing the accident or not. Under Florida law (Title XXXVII, 627.736), PIP insurance covers up to 80 percent of medical bills up to a maximum of $10,000, 60 percent of the injured party’s lost wages, as well as a $10,000 death benefit in the case of a fatal accident.
Orlando Personal Injury Lawyer Advises Everyone to Practice SAFE Driving This Holiday Season
Orlando personal injury attorney James O. Cunningham would like to remind readers to exercise extra care while driving during the upcoming holiday season and heed the advice given recently by two Orlando firefighter paramedics. Paramedics Joe McCluan and Scott Neusch recently presented a Stay Alive From Education (SAFE) program to Air Force cadets, where they showed graphic photos and grisly videos from auto accidents and had cadets participate in role-playing exercises to illustrate the poor choices that some drivers make that lead to accidents.
Teacher Injured in Orlando Auto Accident
A 33-year-old Evans High science teacher suffered injuries when her Jeep was struck by a stolen vehicle carrying three teens. Police report that the 17-year-old driver of the stolen Mitsubishi ran a red light and struck the teacher’s Jeep Liberty on the passenger side. The accident occurred around 7 a.m. on Nov. 26 near the high school at the intersection of Silver Star Road and Kingsland Avenue.
Intrepid Bicyclist Experiences His Own “Horrible” Bike Ride
The only bicyclist to participate in all 33 “Horrible Hundred Bike Rides” across Lake County nearly had his streak broken recently when he had his own horrible bike ride early this month. Stephen Rooks is a 56-year-old Cocoa Beach resident and an avid bicyclist who was involved in a serious bicycle accident when a driver failed to yield the right of way and turned directly in front of him. The driver was turning into her driveway and claims that she didn’t see the rider when she caused the accident that broke Rooks’ left clavicle and three ribs and destroyed his beloved bike.
Florida Officers Wear Costumes to Catch Speeders and Other Violators
Law enforcement agencies throughout Florida recently used some very unorthodox tactics to catch drivers disobeying the rules of the road. Officers dressed as leprechauns, prostitutes, elves, vagrants, political protesters, tourists, golfers and in other garb besides their usual uniforms positioned themselves at intersections and along busy roadways in sting operations that were very successful.
Orlando Woman Killed in Multi-car Crash on Interstate 4
A woman in her 20s was struck and killed by a car after getting out of her wrecked car and trying to get to the side of Interstate 4 after a large auto accident involving several vehicles. Florida Highway Patrol troopers report that the victim was killed in the westbound lanes of I-4 during the morning rush hour. The multi-car crash and pedestrian accident closed all lanes of I-4 while officers reconstructed the events that led to the accidents and workers cleared debris from the roadway.
