Florida Man Receives Sentence After DUI Accident That Killed Two-Year-Old Girl

Circuit Judge Wayne Wooten recently announced a sentence in a case involving a DUI accident that claimed the life of a two-year-old girl on Aug. 5, 2009. The 39-year-old driver convicted in the case received a 16-year sentence after pleading guilty last June to DUI manslaughter, possession of a controlled substance and other charges. The driver crashed his vehicle into a PT Cruiser carrying the victim and her family outside the Westgate Lakes Resort & Spa on the day of the accident. Accident investigators found that the man was legally drunk and had been driving nearly twice the posted speed limit when the accident occurred.

Slow Down After Massive Florida Auto Accidents

He was reminded of the importance of people adjusting their driving habits to weather conditions and allowing adequate space between vehicles after a recent massive collision on Interstate 75 in Sarasota County. The accident occurred on I-75 near mile marker 213 during a fierce downpour and sent more than 50 people to nearby hospitals and closed the interstate for more than six hours. The crash involved at least 47 cars in at least 12 separate crashes at the site.

Area Florida Businesses Tired of Waiting for State Ban on Texting While Driving Enact Their Own Ban

Although state lawmakers have not yet passed legislation banning texting while driving, some Florida businesses and non-profit organizations have enacted their own rules preventing employees, students and others from sending and reading texts while behind the wheel. Our state remains one of only six states without laws prohibiting drivers from sending or reading text messages while driving despite overwhelming evidence that drivers who send and read texts are at substantially higher risk for causing and being involved in accidents. Cunningham and other Orlando personal injury attorneys strongly support a texting ban, but, despite numerous bills introduced in recent years, Florida lawmakers have not yet made any of these bills into laws.

One Person Killed, Another Injured in Fatal S.R. 528 Accident in Florida

One man was killed and other seriously injured when the truck they were driving collided with the back of another truck on State Road 528 in Orange County. Florida Highway Patrol accident investigators are still conducting their investigation into the accident but report that the accident involved a U-Haul truck pulling a trailer and a pickup truck that was also hauling a trailer. Officers say that a 22-year-old passenger was killed and the 58-year-old driver of the U-Haul truck was seriously injured because they were following the pickup truck and trailer too closely when the accident occurred.

One Teen Killed and Five Injured on Florida I-95 Car Crash

One teenager was killed and five others seriously injured after an car accident on I-95 in Brevard County last week. The crash happened in Melbourne near the Pineda Causeway, and the van was carrying six teens who were traveling back home after winning a basketball tournament. The van blew a tire, hit another car and turned over several times. Brandon Fritz, 15, a student at Eau Gallie High School, was ejected from the vehicle and killed.

Florida Vehicle Pileup Kills Ten On I-75 Near Gainesville

The investigation continues into a pileup that has killed ten people and injured several others. The crashes occurred on a stretch of I-75 near Gainesville, FL late Saturday, January 28 and early Sunday, the 29th. It has been reported that wreckage was strewn along the road for about a mile, and the highway was closed for hours. One survivor said that the scene looked “like the end of the world.”

Website Calls Florida’s Interstates 95 and 4 Among the Deadliest in the Country

A website recently ranked the most dangerous highways in the United States and found that Interstate 95 and Interstate 4 ranked 1 and 3, respectively, as having the worst rates of deadly auto accidents. The Daily Beast may not sound like a credible source for information, but the site used information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for ranking. The site used five years of NHTSA data to determine their rankings, and they found that the 382 miles of I-95 running the length of our state was the most deadly for drivers and passengers.

Two College Students Killed in Car Accident Fleeing from Deputy

A recent article published in the Gainesville Sun reports that two Santa Fe College students were killed in a car accident early in the morning of September 27, 2009 when they rolled their vehicle while fleeing from a Marion County Sheriff’s deputy. Accident investigators say the single-car accident occurred at the intersection of County Road 329 west of NE 30th Court in North Marion County. The 18-year-old driver of a black 1999 Chevrolet Camaro and his 18-year-old passenger were reportedly traveling eastbound on CR 329 at a very high rate of speed around 1 a.m.
