Head-On Collision Causes Gridlock on State Road 407 in Brevard County
Just a few short hours before NASA’s historic launch of the Artemis I rocket yesterday morning, a severe head-on collision between a sedan-style vehicle and a tour bus snarled traffic along State Road 407 in Brevard County.
According to preliminary auto accident reports from members of the Florida Highway Patrol and officials with the Brevard County Fire Rescue, it was close to 5:30 a.m. on Monday, August 29, 2022, when a 28-year-old man from Indialantic was behind the wheel of a Lexus and driving in the eastbound direction of State Road 407, also known as Challenger Memorial Highway to local residents.
Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol indicate that as he entered the vicinity of State Road 528 and State Road 405, the 28-year-old driver pulled his Lexus into the westbound lane of a no-passing zone in order to drive around a slower-moving vehicle, and in doing so, he unknowingly positioned his car in the direct path of an oncoming charter bus. Neither driver was unable to avoid a collision, and the two vehicles crashed into each other head-on.
Emergency responders with the Brevard County Fire Rescue and Florida Highway Patrol officers arrived at the scene of the accident and were able to successfully remove the badly-injured Lexus driver from his heavily-damaged vehicle. He was flown by helicopter as a trauma alert to the Orlando Regional Medical Center. The 70-year-old bus driver, a man from Orlando, sustained minor injuries during the collision and was transported to Rockledge Regional Hospital for additional medical treatment.
There were no passengers aboard the tour bus at the time of the crash. It is unclear at the time if any formal charges will be filed.
