Local Man Critically Injured When His Car Is Struck By Stolen Truck
A 27-year-old Orlando man was critically injured recently when his car was struck by a stolen pickup truck driven by a 17-year-old Winter Springs girl. The girl faces numerous charges in connection with the accident and the alleged theft of a Chevrolet pickup truck. Florida Highway Patrol troopers report that they first spotted the girl when they noticed her driving without her headlights on Goldenrod Road near Bates Avenue in Orange County early in the morning on Feb. 21. When a trooper attempted to pull her over, she fled from him at a high rate of speed before causing the accident that injured the Orlando man.
Troopers say that the girl fled westbound on State Road 50 before driving through a red light at S.R. 417, where she struck a Volkswagen driven by the victim, who was traveling south on S.R. 417 and was attempting to turn left onto S.R. 50. The truck struck the left side of the Volkswagen, critically injuring the driver. He was taken to an area hospital, where he is being treated for undisclosed injuries. The driver of the pickup truck and her 18-year-old female passenger were taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where they were treated for minor injuries and arrested. Both occupants of the stolen truck face charges in connection with the theft, and the driver faces additional charges of driving without a license, fleeing and eluding officers, driving without headlights, disobeying multiple traffic signals and causing the accident.
The teenage girl could also be liable for damages in a personal injury lawsuit in addition to the criminal charges. Fleeing and eluding a law enforcement official and running multiple red lights are only two of the several types of negligence that led to the accident. We do not know the exact nature of the victim’s injuries, but since he is listed as critical, it is likely that his injuries are quite serious and will require weeks of expensive hospital care.
