Two Teenagers Killed, Two Seriously Injured During Pickup Truck Crash in Osteen
Preliminary collision reports from officers with the Florida Highway Patrol working within Volusia County are currently investigating the cause of a deadly pickup truck accident that claimed the lives of two teenagers and severely injured two others Monday evening along Osteen Maytown Road near Uranus Trail in the city of Osteen.
According to Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Sgt. Tara Crescenzi, it was approximately 8:04 p.m. on September 13, 2021, when four teenagers ranging in age from 14-19 were traveling eastbound in a pickup truck along Osteen Maytown Road west of Uranus Trail. At this same time, a 50-year-old man from Osteen was driving a different pickup truck in the opposite, westbound direction of the same street. For reasons unknown, the teen driver of the first truck lost control of his vehicle and abruptly swerved into a roadside ditch that was filled with water. The first pickup then crashed into two coniferous trees before it rolled over several times along the roadway and eventually crashed into the second truck.
Volusia County emergency response teams, as well as authorities with the Florida Highway Patrol, were immediately dispatched to the site of the grisly accident to discover that the 17-year-old driver was partially ejected from his pickup truck and had already passed away from the severe nature of his injuries. His 19-year-old front passenger was also fatally injured and was pronounced dead at the scene. Although they were both wearing seatbelts, a 14-year-old boy from Osteen and an 18-year-old man from Deltona who were riding as rear passengers in the pickup truck suffered life-threatening injuries as well and were transported to a local hospital for further medical assistance.
The 50-year-old driver of the other pickup truck sustained minor injuries in the collision, however, he did not require hospitalization. Neither of the two deceased victims were wearing their safety belts at the time of the accident.
This truly tragic accident remains under investigation by troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol. It is unclear at this time if any of the individuals involved in the collision will face any legal consequences. The Florida Highway Patrol is expected to release additional information once their case has come to a conclusion.
