Wheelchair-Bound Woman and Dog Killed During Brevard County Crash
Traffic homicide detectives with the Melbourne Police Department are investigating a fatal pedestrian accident that claimed the lives of a 74-year-old woman and her dog after they were both struck by a vehicle while walking across the street last Saturday near Lake Washington Road.
Although the exact time of the accident has yet to be confirmed by local authorities, early collision reports from members of the Melbourne Police Department indicate that on August 27, 2022, 74-year-old pedestrian Mary Tuck and her dog were taking a walk in the northbound direction of North Wickham Road. As the pair neared the street’s intersection with Lake Washington Road, the wheelchair-bound Melbourne resident and her pet attempted to cross the lanes of traffic and were struck by an oncoming 2018 Kia Niro being driven by a 45-year-old woman from Virginia.
Several local law enforcement agencies were dispatched to the scene of the pedestrian vs. car accident, including officers with the Melbourne Police Department and emergency teams with the Brevard County Fire Rescue. Upon their arrival, they assessed the situation and quickly secured the severely injured pedestrian for transport. The 74-year-old victim was immediately taken to a local hospital in serious condition where she sadly was unable to survive and passed away. Her dog was also killed during the collision.
It is unclear if the 45-year-old driver of the Kia Niro sustained any injuries during the incident. Investigative authorities with the Melbourne Police Department are currently working to determine if drugs or alcohol played a factor in the deadly crash. No official charges have been filed at this time.
