75-Year-Old Pedestrian Killed While Crossing the Street in Lakeland

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on August 20, 2021

According to preliminary accident reports from the Lakeland Police Department, a 75-year-old female pedestrian was struck and killed by an SUV this past Wednesday morning as she was walking across North Socrum Loop Road near Sandpiper’s Way in Polk County.

It was shortly before 10 a.m. on August 18, 2021, when Polk County 9-1-1 dispatchers were first alerted to an auto accident involving a pedestrian and a sport utility vehicle close to the intersection of Sandpiper’s Way and N. Socrum Loop Rd. in Lakeland. Details from detectives with the Lakeland Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit indicate that 75-year-old Lakeland resident Shirley Worley was attempting to cross the typically busy street from east to west when she was hit by an oncoming Cadillac SUV driving northbound on the same road.

Polk County emergency response teams as well as additional assistance from other local law enforcement agencies all arrived at the crash site to find that the 75-year-old had sustained serious life-threatening injuries during the pedestrian accident. Although EMTs worked diligently to save her, the woman’s injuries proved to be far too severe and she sadly passed away.

The 75-year-old male driver of the SUV, David Fannin, remained at the accident site after the collision occurred and was said to be in full cooperation with the investigation. At the time of this writing, officers do not believe alcohol or drugs to have played a factor.
