Rider Killed, Passenger Critically Injured in Daytona Beach Motorcycle Accident
One man was killed and two more people were injured in a recent Daytona Beach motorcycle accident that occurred when a car pulled out in front of the rider. Daytona Beach police report that the accident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Nova Road just north of Beville Road. They say that a car pulled out of a shopping center parking lot in front of the motorcycle, giving the rider little time to react or take evasive action. Police report that the motorcycle collided with the car, causing the rider and his passenger to be ejected and creating a gas leak in the car that burst into flames. Fire crews responded quickly to the scene of the accident and put out the flames while EMTs attended to the injured. Police report that the driver of the motorcycle died from his injuries and his passenger suffered critical injuries. The driver of the car suffered minor injuries in the crash.
Novelty Helmets Offer Little Protection in a Motorcycle Accident
Motorcycle accident attorneys in Florida are reminding readers to base their purchasing decisions on protective headgear on safety standards, instead of on a helmet’s look. A recent report revealed that around 800,000 novelty motorcycle helmets are sold in the U.S. each year. This headgear typically features stylish colors and designs but does not offer the levels of protection provided by headgear approved by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which sets safety standards for helmets. There have been several attempts in recent years to limit sales of novelty motorcycle helmets, but decisive action on the issue has been repeatedly delayed.
Organizers Expect 250,000 Visitors for This Year’s Bike Fest in Leesburg
Organizers of this year’s Bike Fest in Leesburg are expecting around 250,000 bikers and motorcycle enthusiasts at the yearly event, or around ten times the city’s population. The 17th annual Bike Fest is the single-largest event in Lake County each year and brings much-needed revenue to local merchants hit hard by the sluggish economy. Bike Fest is considered more family-friendly than Daytona Bike Week and other Florida motorcycle events are and offers live music, food, vendors and activities for kids. The event is scheduled for the weekend of April 26-28 and draws additional law enforcement personnel, as well as visitors. All of Leesburg’s police officers will be on duty for the event, and an additional 15 deputies from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office will be on patrol for drunken drivers and riders and disorderly behavior.

Two Motorcyclists Injured When Mattress Flies Off Truck
Orlando motorcycle accident attorneys are closely following developments in a case in south Florida involving two riders who were injured when they were struck by a mattress that flew off the back of a pickup truck. The accident occurred around 2 p.m. in San Carlos Park, a community near Fort Myers. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the 56-year-old motorcyclist and his 54-year-old female passenger were eastbound on Alico Road behind a 1996 Chevrolet pickup truck when a mattress became airborne and struck them.
Older Riders More Likely to Be Severely Injured in Motorcycle Accidents
James O. Cunningham and other Orlando motorcycle accident lawyers are alarmed at the findings of a recent study published in the journal Injury Prevention. The study compared the motorcycle accident statistics and severity of injuries of riders over 40 years of age with younger riders and found that older riders are three times more likely than younger riders are to suffer severe injuries in an accident. This is of particular concern to Orlando personal injury attorneys, as an increasing number of older people are purchasing motorcycles and the Orlando metropolitan area, like most of our state, is home to a larger percentage of older people than most states.
Rider Seriously Injured in Florida Hit-and-Run Motorcycle Accident
Police are investigating a hit-and-run motorcycle accident in Casselberry that sent a rider to the hospital with serious injuries. The accident occurred at State Road 436 and Casselton Drive, just north of Aloma Avenue. Police are looking for the driver of a black SUV or sedan who struck the rider and then fled the scene. They believe that the motorcyclist and the driver who struck him were traveling side-by-side in separate lanes when the driver may have swerved into the rider’s lane to avoid construction work in the roadway. They believe that the maneuver caused the driver to collide with and seriously injure the rider. Anyone with any information about the accident is asked to contact the Casselberry Police Department.
