Motorcycle Accident Fatally Injures Rider and Sends Six People to Area Hospitals
A 23-year-old Orlando man was fatally injured recently when his motorcycle struck a minivan that had turned in front of him. The 30-year-old driver of the van, her 36-year-old female passenger and four children riding in the van were also injured in the crash. Florida Highway Patrol troopers say that the accident occurred around 6:50 p.m. on Good Homes Road at the intersection with the East-West Expressway in west Orange County. They report that the motorcyclist was riding his 2007 Kawasaki south on Good Homes Road when a northbound 2011 Toyota minivan suddenly turned left onto the expressway in front of him.
Troopers report that the victim had no time to take evasive action, and his motorcycle struck the passenger side of the van. He died at the scene from his injuries. The minivan driver and her passenger were taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where they received treatment for serious injuries. The four children, ages unknown, were taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children for observation for minor injuries. Troopers have not yet filed charges in connection with the accident but expect to when their investigation is complete.
According to statistics from the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles, there has been a sizable increase in the number of motorcycle accidents on Florida roadways. From 2010 to 2011, the most recent data available, accidents rose 15.19 percent from 7,484 in 2010 to 8,621 in 2011. That means that in 2011, there was an average of nearly one serious motorcycle accident each hour of the year (23.16 each day.)
