Two People Killed During a Car Crash on the Courtney Campbell Causeway
Traffic homicide detectives with the Tampa Police Department are currently investigating a two-car crash that claimed the lives of two people and critically injured two others earlier this morning along the Courtney Campbell Causeway.
Preliminary incident reports from responding officers with the Clearwater and Tampa Police Departments indicate that it was shortly after 3:40 a.m. on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, when they received the first of many 9-1-1 calls referencing a severe auto accident involving two vehicles on the Courtney Campbell Causeway.
Witness statements retrieved from the scene of the crash said after the two vehicles collided with one another, one car rolled over several times which caused multiple passengers to be ejected from the vehicle onto the roadway.
Since the Courtney Campbell Causeway is shared by Hillsborough and Pinellas County, emergency response teams from both Clearwater and Tampa raced to the scene of the accident. Upon their arrival, they quickly determined that two men from one vehicle had suffered severe life-threatening injuries during the collision and had already passed away. Two other individuals who were in the same car also sustained serious injuries and were immediately transported to a local hospital for additional medical treatment. They were said to be in critical condition at the time of this publication. The driver of the other vehicle was unharmed in the crash. The names of the victims have not yet been released to the public and will not be until their families have been notified.
It took local authorities nearly 11 hours to clean up the crash site and gather enough evidence to move forward with the investigation. Further details surrounding this fatal collision are unknown, although an update from the Tampa Police Department is expected in the upcoming days.
