Port Orange Man Killed During T-Bone Crash with Range Rover
Within just a few days, authorities with the Daytona Beach Police Traffic Homicide Unit have determined the initial cause behind a fatal auto accident that claimed the life of a devoted & doting father of three last Saturday morning.
According to preliminary car accident reports from the Daytona Beach Police Department, it was 6:05 a.m. on March 18, 2023, when 28-year-old David Thorpe, Sr. was driving a 2017 Dodge Charger in the eastbound direction of Mason Avenue, heading home from his job at B. Braun Medical Inc. At this same time, a 22-year-old man was driving a Range Rover in the northbound direction of Bill France Boulevard and ran the red light at the street’s intersection with Mason Avenue.
A statement retrieved from the 22-year-old driver after the deadly collision said that “he was looking down at his cellphone and when he looked up the traffic light was red as he passed into the intersection and collided.”
The Range Rover crashed into the side of the Dodge Charger, causing serious damage to the 28-year-old driver and the vehicle itself.
Volusia County emergency response teams and officers with the Daytona Beach Police Department were dispatched to the scene of the T-bone accident and arrived within a matter of minutes. Sadly, David Thorpe Sr. sustained severe life-threatening injuries during the collision and did not survive.
No formal charges have been filed against the 22-year-old driver of the Range Rover, who police say has a driver’s license from Irving, Texas. The vehicle was also outfitted with Texas plates.
A GoFundMe has been created by the victim’s fiancé to help with medical bills and funeral expenses.
