Driver Killed During Rear-End Crash with Semi in Volusia County

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on July 27, 2023

An investigation into the death of a 34-year-old Eustis man has been launched by the Florida Highway Patrol this week after his vehicle was involved in a fatal rear-end collision with a semi-truck early Tuesday morning on State Road 44 in Volusia County.

According to the latest auto accident reports from troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol working within Volusia County, it was close to 7:15 a.m. on July 25, 2023, when a 34-year-old man from Eustis was driving a 2016 Dodge Ram 1500 in the eastbound direction of State Road 44 near Paradise Drive, with three small children as passengers. At this same time, a semi-truck hauling a utility pole and another commercial vehicle entered the area after turning onto S.R. 44 from Paradise Drive.

Authorities believe that the 34-year-old driver moved the Dodge Ram over into the westbound lane of traffic in order to pass the two larger vehicles, however, a different oncoming vehicle caused him to return to his own lane behind the big rig. After performing this maneuver, the driver of the Dodge Ram failed to slow down for the approaching semi and the pickup’s front windshield collided with the utility pole that was being pulled behind the big rig. The rest of the Dodge Ram then crashed into the rear of the truck’s trailer.

The Florida Highway Patrol and Volusia County emergency responders were the first to arrive at the scene of the accident. Medical teams immediately transported two three-month children and one five-year-old child to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach as a precautionary measure. They were unharmed during the incident, however, the 34-year-old driver of the Dodge Ram sustained fatal injuries and passed away at the crash site.

The 25-year-old driver of the semi-truck, a man from DeLand, was not injured.

No further information is known at this time.
