Driver Dead, Passenger Critically Injured After Volusia County Car Crash
A single-car crash in Volusia County remains under investigation as members of the Florida Highway Patrol attempt to discover just what it was that caused the fatal incident to take place. What we know at this time comes from reports by the Florida Highway Patrol, members of whom were among the first responders to reach the crash site and begin tending to the injured individuals.
A preliminary investigation into the crash unearthed much of the details surrounding the incident. According to the subsequent reports, the incident happened sometime around 10:40 at night on Sunday, February 14th. At this time, a 51-year-old from Daytona Beach was behind the wheel of a vehicle and driving down the northern lanes of Tomoka Farms Road. Beside this person in the car was a 17-year-old, also a resident of Daytona Beach. The relation of the two people is not currently public knowledge.
While making their way along Tomoka Farms Road, something happened to cause the driver of the car to lose control of the vehicle. The attempts the 51-year-old made to adjust their course, regain control of the car, and continue on their way were not successful, and after the car left the roadway, the driver overcorrected which caused the car to shoot back across the entire roadway and crash into a power pole located along the opposite shoulder.
The force of the crash was tremendous, and despite the fact that both the 51-year-old and the 17-year-old were wearing seatbelts at the time, they each sustained devastating injuries. When the paramedics and EMTs reached the scene with other first responders, there was nothing that they could do for the 51-year-old driver. This person was declared dead at the scene of the crash.
The 17-year-old was alive when paramedics reached the scene, and this person was able to be transported via ambulance to Halifax Medical Center. They were admitted to the emergency medical location and began to undergo treatment for their injuries immediately. The condition of this person at this time is not known, but it was clear that when they were admitted to the hospital their condition was critical.
