Deadly Two-Car Crash in Marion County Kills Summerfield Man on U.S. 441
Detectives with the Florida Highway Patrol are currently working to unravel the timeline of events that preceded a fatal auto accident which claimed the life of a 37-year-old Summerfield man and seriously injured 4 others in Marion County over the weekend. Early collision reports indicate that the deadly car crash occurred along U.S. 441 near County Road 42 at approximately 10:15 a.m. this past Saturday morning.
According to Marion County Fire Rescue spokesman James Lucas, local law enforcement and emergency responders received their first 9-1-1 call referring to an auto accident involving a pickup truck and an SUV on U.S. 441 just south of C.R. 42 in Marion County. Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol stated that a Toyota Highlander SUV carrying four occupants was travelling northbound along U.S. 441 when a pickup truck entered the area driving southbound on the same highway.
For reasons that are currently unknown, the 37-year-old driver of the pickup truck suddenly lost control of his vehicle, swerved from the roadway, crossed the grassy median divider, and struck the front of the Toyota Highlander SUV. The amount of force from the impact of the collision caused the pickup truck to then rollover before finally coming to a stop in a roadside ditch.
Marion County rescue teams were able to arrive at the crash site within minutes of being dispatched to the scene, however, due the severe nature of his injuries, they were sadly unable to save the pickup truck driver and he passed away at the scene. The family of four in the Toyota Highlander SUV were all transported to a local hospital in severe, yet stable condition. They have been identified as a 55-year-old and 54-year-old husband and wife from Summerfield, along with their daughter and her boyfriend in town from Smithfield, Rhode Island.
