Indianapolis Woman Killed in Daytona Beach Pedestrian Accident
According to the authorities with the Daytona Beach Police Department, an investigation has been opened in the death of a Volusia County pedestrian after she was struck and killed by a pickup truck while attempting to cross the heavily-trafficked International Speedway Boulevard close to Red John Drive shortly before 7 a.m. on January 25th, 2021.
Administrators with the First Steps homeless shelter at 3889 W. International Speedway Blvd. told officers with the Daytona Beach Police Department that it was approximately 6:45 a.m. Monday morning when a 30-year-old resident was getting herself together, gathering up her things, and heading out the door to her very first day of work at a local warehouse. After walking through a nearby parking lot, she continued on-foot towards her bus stop located on the other side of the busy highway near Red John Drive. While the victim was crossing the multi-lane roadway, she realized she had dropped one of her personal belongings in the street. It was as she returned to retrieve the item that a white pickup truck travelling along the eastbound lanes approached the area and crashed into the pedestrian.
First responders with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene almost immediately and attempted to resuscitate the seriously injured pedestrian, however, due to the severe nature of her injuries, she was sadly pronounced dead at Halifax Health Medical Center about an hour and a half after she arrived. The driver of the pickup truck remained at the scene and is not expected to face any charges.
“Everyone here at First Step is grieving her loss. She has only been here since January 5th but has already made some good friends. She was working hard and doing what she needed to do to make a new life for herself. We feel devastated,” stated First Step Executive Director Victoria Fahlberg.
Friends of the victim indicated that she was dedicated to changing her life for the better and was determined to reunite with her 10-year-old daughter. Local government authorities are currently discussing changes to the bus route and stops so that a tragic accident such as this never happens again.
