State Senate Committee Takes Steps to Close Unlicensed Assisted Living Facilities
In a move supported by James O. Cunningham and other Orlando elder abuse attorneys, a Senate committee recently vowed to close unlicensed assisted living facilities (ALFs) in Florida. The committee responded to a recent article in the Miami Herald that revealed many unlicensed ALF operators have been using loopholes in state laws to escape routine inspections by state agencies. The article found many facilities that claimed to be rooming houses, shelters or “sober homes” but were, for all intents and purposes, ALFs with deplorable conditions for residents. One operator had a criminal history which would have prevented them from owning or operating a licensed ALF.
Two-Year-Old Girl Injured in Lake County Drunk Driving Accident
Florida Highway Patrol troopers have arrested a 27-year-old Lady Lake woman in connection with a drunk driving accident that injured a 2-year-old girl riding in the woman’s car. Troopers say the suspect faces numerous criminal charges, including DUI and causing serious bodily injury, leaving the scene of an accident, child neglect and other charges. The accident occurred on Grays Airport Road in Lady Lake around 9 p.m. one recent evening when the driver, who was traveling southbound in a Pontiac Grand Prix veered off the road, hit a telephone pole and mailbox and rolled over after striking a tree.
Universal Closes Roller Coaster after Rider is Injured in Amusement Park Accident
A guest at Universal Studios Florida was injured recently while riding the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit roller coaster, prompting the Orlando theme park to close the ride while the accident was investigated. Orlando amusement park accident lawyers are following developments in this case quite closely, as the roller coaster is the tallest in Central Florida and reaches speeds up to 65 mph. The roller coaster rises 17 stories above the theme park and can be seen for miles around. The height, combined with the fast speeds, make it one of the most thrilling rides in the theme park, but also one of the most potentially dangerous rides in the event of human error or mechanical failure.
Making Dangerous Stretch of I-4 More Accessible for Emergency Vehicles
Orlando auto accident lawyers fully support efforts to make a particularly dangerous stretch of Interstate 4 in Volusia County more accessible for emergency responders. A recent editorial in the Daytona Beach News-Journal called the portion of I-4 between State Road 44 and U.S. 92 “a cattle chute,” due to the high rate of accidents during road construction and the difficulties emergency responders are having in getting to people injured in these accidents.
Palm Bay Woman Injured in Dog Bite Attack
A Brevard County woman was taken to the hospital recently after being attacked by a pack of three dogs that belong to a neighbor. The 53-year-old victim was walking near her home in the 3200-block of Hainlin Avenue in Palm Bay when she was attacked by the dogs and badly injured. Police report that she suffered multiple bite wounds, including cuts and deep bruises to the upper portion of her body. A neighbor who witnessed the dog bite attack ran to help the lady by scaring off the dogs and using a shovel to protect the victim until emergency responders arrived on the scene.
GM Recalls some Cruze Models for Brake Problems
General Motors recently announced that they are recalling nearly 300,000 Chevrolet Cruze automobiles to fix a potential problem with the brakes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that GM is voluntarily issuing the recall for 292,879 Cruze cars from the 2011 and 2012 model years. The recalled cars are equipped with turbocharged 1.4-liter gasoline motors, six-speed automatic transmissions and an electric vacuum pump, which provides supplemental vacuum for brake assist, when needed.

Woman Killed in Auto Accident Involving Disney Bus
A Walt Disney World employee was fatally injured recently in an auto accident that involved a Disney World bus. Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers report that the accident occurred around 3:25 p.m. when the employee, a 63-year-old woman, stopped her 1996 Buick in the left lane of Epcot Center Drive and was rear-ended by Disney’s Magical Express bus. The bus had picked up tourists from Orlando International Airport and was en route to various Disney resorts when the accident occurred. FHP accident investigators report that the driver of the westbound bus applied the brakes when he saw the Buick stop in front of him but was unable to avoid striking it.
Kissimmee Man Killed in Hit-and-Run Auto Accident on I-4
Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers are looking for the public’s assistance in finding the driver they think is responsible for a recent fatal hit-and-run accident on Interstate 4 in Orlando. The crash claimed the life of a 61-year-old Kissimmee man, who was driving to work at Lake Eola Charter School, where he taught history and social studies. FHP troopers report that the man suffered fatal injuries when he lost control of his 2008 Hyundai, which left the roadway and struck a palm tree in the median around 6:22 a.m. near Orange Blossom Trail.
Six-Year-Old Girl Dies From Injuries in Trucking Accident
A six-year-old St. Petersburg girl who was trapped underwater in a ditch in her family’s minivan has died from her injuries according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP). FHP troopers say that the girl and her family were traveling in her family’s Toyota minivan when it was struck from behind by a tractor-trailer in rural Osceola County. They report that the family’s van was making a left turn into a driveway when they were struck by the semi. Troopers say that the 29-year-old driver of the truck swerved into oncoming traffic to avoid colliding with the minivan but was unable to avoid the collision. The impact caused the minivan to roll onto its roof, and it came to rest upside-down in the water-filled ditch, trapping the family inside.
