Woman Killed in Auto Accident Involving Disney Bus
A Walt Disney World employee was fatally injured recently in an auto accident that involved a Disney World bus. Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers report that the accident occurred around 3:25 p.m. when the employee, a 63-year-old woman, stopped her 1996 Buick in the left lane of Epcot Center Drive and was rear-ended by Disney’s Magical Express bus. The bus had picked up tourists from Orlando International Airport and was en route to various Disney resorts when the accident occurred. FHP accident investigators report that the driver of the westbound bus applied the brakes when he saw the Buick stop in front of him but was unable to avoid striking it.
Around three dozen tourists were on board the bus, which is operated by Mears Transportation Group, at the time of the accident. Two of the passengers were taken to Florida Hospital Celebration Health (FHCH) to receive treatment for minor injuries. The 33-year-old driver declined medical treatment, as well as the rest of the passengers. The driver of the Buick was pronounced dead from her injuries at FHCH. A Disney spokesperson told troopers that the victim was a cast member in a production in one of the company’s resorts.
Troopers say that the accident occurred at Overpass Road near the Epcot theme park. They are interviewing passengers who were on the bus when the accident occurred, as well as other motorists who witnessed the accident. They are also looking into whether or not the Buick was experiencing mechanical problems that may have contributed to the accident. FHP Spokesperson Sgt. Kim Montes told reporters that the accident occurred near a rise in the road, and investigators are also looking into whether line-of-sight issues contributed to the accident.
