Palm Coast House Fire Destroys Home of Ex-Marine and Family
Due to circumstances that are still under investigation, the house of an ex-Marine in Palm Coast was destroyed in a fire that began in the home’s garage because of an issue with a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. According to a statement given by Robert Detherow, ex-Marine and homeowner, the fire began shortly after he returned from a drive that he and his young daughter had taken with the Harley.

This Sunday in Orlando an accident between a motorcycle and a Ford Escape has left one individual dead and another individual potentially facing manslaughter charges. The incident, as has been reported by the Florida Highway Patrol, occurred in the afternoon along Econlockhatchee Trail. Failure to Yield Leads to Accident, Injuries in Indian Rivers Country
A man was seriously injured in a two car crash happening Friday near the county fairgrounds in Indian Rivers Country, Florida. The crash involved a white SUV and a blue pickup truck. The pickup truck was traveling east on 77th Street and failed to yield at a blinking red light. As the truck travelled through the intersection it crashed into an SUV driven by a female. The SUV had three children inside.
Father Injured, Son Killed in Daytona Beach Crosswalk
In the latest of a string of deadly accidents taking place in and around Daytona Beach, a 27-year-old man was injured and his 9-year-old son killed as they attempted to cross the Nova Road on Monday night. This incident, which does not appear to be connected to the accidents and fatalities caused by participants in the annual Bike Week extravaganza taking place in Daytona beach, nonetheless lands on a list of similar automobile-caused injuries and fatalities experienced by visitors to and citizens of Daytona Beach over the past week.
According to the official statement given by the Daytona Police Department, the accident which took the life of a 9-year-old boy happened around 8:00 PM on Monday evening. Miguel A. Leonor was attempting to cross Nova Road with his son Anthony D. Altamirano when a car driving down Nova Road towards Brentwood Drive crossed the area where Miguel and Anthony were attempting to walk. The car struck both pedestrians.
The driver of the vehicle, an unnamed individual, immediately called for the police and other emergency response teams. When they arrived, they boy and his father were both rushed to the nearby Halifax Hospital. Both were listed as being on trauma alert, meaning that their external injuries were bad enough to cause serious concern among the first-responders and hospital staff.
Miguel A. Leonor was able to be returned to somewhat stable condition, although he did suffer damage along his entire body and it is not clear whether or not he was released from the hospital or is still under observation. The boy, on the other hand, received the brunt of the damage. The extent of the injuries to his head and body were severe enough that there was nothing the experienced medical staff could do to save him. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
At this time, neither the Daytona Beach Police Department nor the family of Anthony Altamirano have filed charges against the driver of the vehicle. In their statement, the Daytona Police stated that it did not seem as though the driver was to blame for the incident.
Severe Head Trauma Cased by Daytona Beach Pedestrian Accident
Early on Sunday Morning, police officers and other emergency responders in Daytona Beach were called to Mason Avenue to investigate and assist an injured individual in the aftermath of a car and pedestrian crash. According to the report filed by the Daytona beach Police Department, the incident involved a man named Samuel Sledd, a 46-year-old Daytona Beach resident, who was attempting to cross Mason Avenue on foot. As Sledd was in the road, a car came along heading northbound on Mason Avenue. The driver of the car, an individual who has yet to be named, was unable to avoid the foot-bound Sledd and collided with the pedestrian.
This event, which occurred shortly after midnight on Sunday, was reported immediately by the driver of the automobile who called the 911 as soon as he could. The emergency response crews arrived quickly and rushed the badly injured Samuel Sledd to the Halifax Hospital. His condition at the time of admission was listed as critical. The report filed by the Florida Highway Patrol states that Sledd suffered from serious injures to his head.
Injuries such as this are frightening to fathom and process, and it often becomes the case that even when the victim survives the initial incident, the head injuries present themselves as an unsurpassably violent trauma. Those who suffer from traumatic brain injuries due to automobile incidents often find themselves in a highly challenging situation, needing to juggle the sudden medical bills as well as handle the loss of wages that often accompanies such injuries.
The Daytona Beach Police Department say that, as of right now, no charges have been filed against the driver of the vehicle, and it is the official position that the car’s operator is, in fact, not responsible for the events that occurred on Sunday morning. No other information has been released regarding the situation, and it is not known how the badly injured Sledd is currently doing nor if his family has been notified. As more facts in the case become available for the public consumption the Florida Highway Patrol and the Daytona Beach Police Department will work together to share what new discoveries are made.
Daytona Bike Week Experiences Deadly Crashes
Each and every year, motorcyclists of all strips look forward to the annual Bike Week event held in Daytona Beach. Attracting thousands of visitors from around the country, Bike Week is a chance for bikers to gather together in camaraderie, show off their choppers and crotch-rockets, and enjoy one another’s company. This year is no different. What is unusual for this year is the number of bike accidents that have occurred since the event’s kick off last Friday. Over the past few days, numerous accidents have been reported in and around Daytona Beach involving motorcycles. Several of these accidents were, sadly, fatal.

This leads to bikers forgetting to stay the appropriate distance behind and between one another, and the increased congestion on the roads makes any minor mistake potentially disastrous.
Another contributing factor to the brutality of the accidents seen during this year’s Bike Week is the lack of helmets. Rafael Vega says that helmets are one of the main reasons behind an individual surviving a motorcycle crash. If you wear a helmet, your odds of coming out of a collision alive begin to skyrocket; without the helmet, these odds plummet. It is as simple as that.
