Reports stemming from data compiled by the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicle’s Crash Dashboard recently emerged which indicated that cyclists attempting to ride within Central Florida are at severe risk for bicycle accidents resulting in injury or death. This data highlights just how at-risk cyclists attempting to ride through Central Florida are, with a review of each of Florida’s counties placing Orange County at the top of the list for collisions and fatalities.
Fatal Orange County Bicycle Accident Leads to Additional Pedestrian Safety Measures
In April, a 10-year-old child was struck and killed by a car while on his way home from school. According to the reports that were released shortly after the fatal bicycle accident, the young boy was on his bike and riding across the street at the intersection of Landstar Boulevard and Wetherbee Road when a driver who was not paying attention to their surroundings struck the child with their car. After colliding with the 10-year-old, the driver sped away from the area.
Malfunctioning Bike Chain Leads to Cyclist Being Fatally Struck by Car
At the very end of July, an accident was reported in Daytona Beach involving an individual on a bicycle and a car. As is often the case in such incidents, the cyclist died as a result of the crash. Reports from the Daytona Beach Police Department stated the cyclist, who was later identified as a 37-year-old, was on a bicycle and riding it along International Speedway Boulevard at close to 3:00 in the afternoon. It is believed that the cyclist was riding in one of the speedway’s outside lanes.
Cyclist Killed After Being Struck by Pickup in Seminole County
A collision in Seminole County that happened on Wednesday, May 15th, resulted in the death of a cyclist. At the time of this writing, the current reports from the Florida Highway Patrol indicate that the collision happened sometime during Wednesday night, although it is not clear if this was earlier in the evening or later.
UPDATE: Frequent Accidents at Intersection Where Ten-Year-Old Child was Killed
After the devastating fatal bicycle accident that happened on Wednesday, April 24th, and left a ten-year-old dead after being struck by a semi at the intersection of Landstar Boulevard and Wetherbee Road, the Florida Highway Patrol investigated the area to determine whether or not it was the intersection itself that was the problem. Their preliminary investigation – only the result of several days of work, at the time of this writing – suggests that, far from being an isolated incident, this incident was only one of close to 25 separate crashes that have occurred at the same intersection between 2017 and now.
Cyclist Struck and Killed by Semi along OBT in Orlando
Investigators with the Florida Highway Patrol are working to uncover the reasons behind a bicycle accident that happened along Orange Blossom Trail on Friday, March 15th, and resulted in the death of a 40-year-old woman who was riding her bike at the time. According to the Florida Highway Patrol’s reports, the incident took place close to 4:20 in the afternoon, near to where Orange Blossom Trail intersects with Kaley Street.
Cyclist Struck and Killed on State Road 520 in Orange County
On Tuesday, January 29th, police working with the Florida Highway Patrol responded to reports of a bicycle accident that had taken place somewhere on State Road 520 within Orange County. When the authorities arrived, they found the crash as reported, and an individual who had been involved suffering from severe injuries as a result.
Young Cyclist in Serious Condition after Orange County Hit-and-Run
The Florida Highway Patrol is putting forth a tremendous amount of effort to locate and apprehend the individual who was driving a car that struck and gravely injured a 13-year-old boy in Orange County on Saturday, September 22nd. According to the reports from the FHP so far, the bicycle accident happened close to 7:30 in the evening. The 13-year-old was riding their bike along Alafaya Trail, close to Science Drive, when they decided to try and cross the street. The area where the young person wanted to cross is not connected to a crosswalk, a factor which is an important consideration in the ongoing investigation.
Seven-Year-Old Hospitalized After Orange County Bicycle Accident
A child was badly injured on Tuesday, September 11th, within Orange County after being hit by a car. Reports from the Florida Highway Patrol that emerged shortly after the incident itself took place suggested that the 7-year-old individual was riding along North Avalon Park Boulevard when the bicycle accident occurred.
