Cyclist Struck and Killed on State Road 520 in Orange County

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on February 1, 2019

On Tuesday, January 29th, police working with the Florida Highway Patrol responded to reports of a bicycle accident that had taken place somewhere on State Road 520 within Orange County. When the authorities arrived, they found the crash as reported, and an individual who had been involved suffering from severe injuries as a result.

What we know so far is that the incident was first reported sometime around 10:15 in the morning. The caller or callers stated that a crash had taken place along State Road 520, close to where this road intersects with Macon Parkway. Shortly before the crash, an unnamed individual had been riding a bicycle, pulling a trailer in which a dog was sitting. The cyclist was traveling eastward down State Road 520, although it is not clear if they were riding inside of a traffic lane or if they were on a shoulder.

For reasons that are not at all clear, two other cars traveling down this same roadway became involved in a collision while driving by the cyclist. It is not known if one of the drivers had swerved in order to avoid striking the cyclist or if some other reason led the cars to crash into one another, but in the subsequent moments one of the cars, by then out of control, struck the cyclist, knocking them from their bike and inflicting fatal injuries on them in the process.

Emergency response crews rushed to the scene and began to immediately tend to the injured person. This person was rushed from the scene of the crash to Florida Hospital East where a more fully-equipped team of medical professionals began to administer aid. Unfortunately, due to the severe nature of the injuries the cyclist sustained in the crash there was nothing that could be done for them and they were declared dead sometime after arriving at the hospital.

The dog inside of the trailer was reportedly doing well after the accident, although it is not clear if it suffered from any injuries as a result of the crash.

One of the two drivers involved was also treated for minor injuries. No other updates to this story have yet emerged.
