Cyclist Struck and Killed by Semi along OBT in Orlando
Investigators with the Florida Highway Patrol are working to uncover the reasons behind a bicycle accident that happened along Orange Blossom Trail on Friday, March 15th, and resulted in the death of a 40-year-old woman who was riding her bike at the time. According to the Florida Highway Patrol’s reports, the incident took place close to 4:20 in the afternoon, near to where Orange Blossom Trail intersects with Kaley Street.
Shortly before the incident took place, a 40-year-old woman was riding a bicycle down the eastern lane of Kaley Street. As they neared the above-mentioned intersection between OBT and Kaley Street they also drew nearer to a semi-truck that was driving down the southern lanes of Orange Blossom Trail.
It is not clear exactly how it happened, but it seems that the right side of the semi hit the cyclist. It is not known if this was after the cyclist had turned onto OBT or if somehow the side of the truck swerved into the lanes of Kaley Street. What we do know is that after the side of the truck struck the cyclist, the driver of the truck stopped the vehicle. 9-1-1 was called and soon numerous emergency response crews had rushed to the scene. Paramedics and EMTs worked to treat the badly injured cyclist, and they loaded her into an ambulance and rushed her to a nearby hospital within Orlando. It is not clear how much time passed between when the individual was struck and when they arrived at the hospital, but we do know that the injuries they sustained in the crash itself were too severe for the doctors and nurses to do anything about. The cyclist was declared dead sometime after arriving at the medical facility.
An investigation is currently underway to determine culpability in this situation. It is not known if the driver of the semi is being held responsible in any way for the incident or if any charges are pending against them. Further reports on this particular event will emerge from the Florida Highway Patrol investigators and will be released to the public as they become available.
