Cyclist Killed After Being Struck by Pickup in Seminole County
A collision in Seminole County that happened on Wednesday, May 15th, resulted in the death of a cyclist. At the time of this writing, the current reports from the Florida Highway Patrol indicate that the collision happened sometime during Wednesday night, although it is not clear if this was earlier in the evening or later.
What we do know is that a 61-year-old individual was riding their bicycle down the southern lanes of Southwest Road. It is not clear if this person was inside of a lane along Southwest Road, or if they were riding down the shoulder of the road. The report also failed to indicate whether this area features any sort of bicycle lane or other area that is specifically reserved for the use of bicycles and pedestrians.
The 61-year-old cyclist was not wearing a helmet when a Dodge pickup truck being driven by a 41-year-old approached them. It is also not known if the bicyclist had activated any sort of lights on their bike or if they were wearing any reflective gear or in any way dressed to alert motorists to their presence on the roadway. Still, it is extra important for drivers of cars to be aware of the entire roadway around them, and this is especially true when there are any bicycles or pedestrians in the area.
We do not know exactly what happened, but it seems clear that the driver of the pickup truck failed to notice the cyclist. This being the case, the fast-moving truck crashed into the back of the cyclist, throwing them from the bike and onto the road.
Emergency crews were called and they rushed to the area to try and tend to the badly injured cyclist. It is believed that the individual driving the Dodge remained at the scene of the accident while the initial investigation was conducted. While the report didn’t indicate whether or not this person suffered any injuries as a result of the crash, it is highly unusual for people inside of cars to become injured after collisions with bicycles or pedestrians.
At the time of this writing the crash is still under investigation. It is not known if any charges are pending against the driver of the Dodge.
