Wrong-Way Car Crash Kills One on State Road 472 in Volusia County
After a refreshingly slow weekend for auto accidents around the state, troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol are now investigating a deadly wrong-way car crash that claimed the life of an Orlando man and seriously injured two others yesterday morning on State Road 472 in Volusia County.
According to early reports from members of the Florida Highway Patrol operating within Volusia County, it was approximately 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 11, 2022, when a 26-year-old man from Orlando was behind the wheel of a 2014 Kia Rio and driving the wrong way along the inside, eastbound lane of State Road 472 outside DeLand. As the Orlando driver approached the intersection near East Minnesota Avenue, he crashed head-on into a 2019 Hyundai Elantra carrying an 18-year-old female driver and her 20-year-old male passenger. The impact from the collision was so forceful that it caused the Kia Rio to overturn on the roadway.
Multiple Volusia County emergency responders and officers with the Florida Highway Patrol were dispatched to the scene of the head-on collision. They quickly determined that the 26-year-old driver of the Kia Rio had sustained severe life-threatening injuries during the accident and had already passed away by the time medical teams arrived at the crash site. Authorities indicated that he was not wearing a seat belt when the incident occurred.
The 18-year-old and 20-year-old occupants of the Hyundai Elantra, both residents of Deltona, suffered serious, but not life-threatening injuries and were transported to a local hospital for additional treatment.
The westbound lanes of State Road 472 were closed for several hours while authorities with the Florida Highway Patrol conducted their preliminary investigations. No charges have officially been filed at this time.
