Truck Driver Killed During Rear-End Crash on S.R. 417 in Orange County
A 47-year-old man from Orlando is potentially facing serious charges from local authorities after his alleged reckless driving led to the death of a semi-truck driver during an auto accident along State Road 417 in Orange County over the weekend.
According to preliminary reports from the Florida Highway Patrol, it was close to 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 5, 2022, when a 47-year-old male Orlando resident, whose name has not been released to the public, was behind the wheel of his Mercedes-Benz traveling in the southern direction of State Road 417. As the luxury vehicle approached the vicinity of mile marker 14.5 near Wyndham Lakes Boulevard, it came upon a semi-truck driving in the outside lane of the highway. For reasons that are currently unknown, the 47-year-old driver failed to slow down for the semi-truck and rear-ended the big rig.
The force of impact from the collision caused the semi-truck to slam into a nearby safety guardrail before it overturned and came to a complete stop on an embankment. The Mercedes-Benz also crashed into a guardrail after colliding with a significant concrete barrier near the initial accident site.
Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol and local emergency response teams arrived at the deadly truck accident shortly before 3 a.m. and almost immediately determined that the driver of the semi-truck had suffered life-ending injuries and had already passed away. The 47-year-old Orlando man was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. No further updates surrounding his condition have been reported.
The driver of the semi-truck was wearing their seat belt at the time of the crash. Investigators with the Florida Highway Patrol are working in conjunction with the local medical examiner’s office in order to determine the identity of the deceased.
Although multiple witnesses have stepped forward to indicate that the driver of the Mercedes appeared to be driving at a high rate of speed, these statements have yet to be corroborated by evidence retrieved from the scene of the accident.
