Passenger Killed During Early Morning Crash in Orange County
State Road 528 was closed for several hours yesterday morning due to a severe two-vehicle crash near Christmas that claimed the life of one individual and injured multiple others, according to early reports from the Florida Highway Patrol.
It was a few minutes after 8 a.m. on Monday, April 10, 2023, when a woman from Cocoa Beach – conflicting reports indicate that her age is either 74 or 75 – was driving her sedan-style BMW in the eastbound direction of State Road 528 close to the S.R. 520 overpass near Christmas. Directly behind her vehicle in the same lane was a Ford Transit van with one driver and seven passengers. For reasons that are currently unknown, the driver of the sedan suddenly lost control of her car and veered off the highway to the left. She overcorrected in the opposite direction which positioned her sedan back on State Road 528 directly behind the van. The driver of the sedan was unable to avoid a collision and her car rear-ended the van on the left side.
In an attempt to gain control of the transit van, the driver also overcorrected their vehicle which caused the Ford to spin out across the highway where it eventually crashed into a safety guardrail and rolled over. The impact from this second collision ejected a female passenger from the van and she died at the scene.
Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol and Orange County emergency responders arrived at the scene of the fatal van accident within a matter of minutes. The driver of the transit van and the remaining passengers were all transported to the nearest hospital for medical treatment of varying injuries, most of them minor.
The driver of the BMW was unharmed during the accident and stayed at the crash site after the deadly collision occurred. It was close to 3 p.m. before the area was reopened to local traffic.
This case is under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. It is unclear if the driver of the BMW will face any charges.
