CDC Report Finds Young Drivers Most Likely to Die in Auto Accidents
Orlando auto accident attorney James O. Cunningham would like to alert readers about a recently published report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that indicates younger, inexperienced drivers are most likely to die in auto accidents than any other age group is. In their recent Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the CDC found that in 2009, there were 34,485 motor vehicle deaths among U.S. residents, with 22 percent of those fatalities affecting people 15 to 24 years of age.
Former Florida Police Officer Faces Charges After FHP Accident Investigation
A former Winter Springs police officer who was released from jail recently after posting bond still faces serious charges in connection with an accident that killed one person and seriously injured another. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) arrested the 34-year-old former police officer and charged him with vehicular homicide, reckless driving and racing on a highway after a six-month investigation. FHP troopers report that on January 12, 2012, the man lost control of his Mazda RX-7 shortly after pulling out of an auto repair shop on West Colonial. They say that after the man pulled into the westbound lanes of West Colonial, the man recklessly stepped on his gas pedal, causing his car to fishtail wildly.
Aggressive Driving Caused Fatal Florida Three-Car Accident On I-95
Florida Highway Patrol accident investigators released their preliminary report in connection with a recent three-car accident that killed a Sunrise man and closed a section of Interstate 95 for four hours. They say that the victim was a passenger in a 1999 Isuzu Rodeo driven by a 45-year-old Sunrise man. Troopers say that the Isuzu was traveling southbound on I-95 when the driver attempted to pass a 2002 Ford Mustang on the right shoulder of the road. When the driver attempted to pull back onto I-95 from the shoulder, he struck the front of the Mustang and lost control of his vehicle.
What to Know If You Are Injured in an Orlando Auto Accident
According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, there were at least 235,461 auto accidents recorded in our state in 2010, an average of 640 accidents every day. These accidents claim the lives of around 2,500 Floridians each year and injure tens of thousands more.
Report Criticizes FHP Troopers’ Actions in Tragic I-75 Accident That Killed Eleven
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) recently issued a report that was sharply critical of Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers’ actions in the aftermath of a deadly chain reaction accident on Interstate 75 in January. Shortly after the accident, troopers were the targets of much criticism for reopening I-75 even though large portions were blanketed with fog and smoke from a nearby wildfire. In the April report, the FDLE criticized troopers directly for how they handled the situation and their judgment for reopening the interstate.
Oil Workers and Motorists Endangered By Extended Working Hours
After working a very long 17-hour shift, Tim Roth and three coworkers began their trip home from their worksite, a natural gas well in Ohio. They hit the road around ten in the evening for the four-hour trip back home to West Virginia. When they were just ten minutes away from home, the driver fell asleep at the wheel, causing their truck to drift off the highway, where it struck a sign. The impact tore one side off the truck, killing Mr. Roth and injuring his three coworkers. The fatal crash came two months after another incident when another worker from the same company fell asleep at the wheel driving home after a long shift and struck a utility pole, nearly killing Roth.
Eleven Injured in Orlando Church Van Crash
A church van and six other vehicles were involved in an Orlando multiple vehicle accident that sent eleven people to area hospitals Wednesday morning. The crash occurred on West Colonial Drive near Paul Street. One of the victims was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, and the others suffered non-life threatening injuries. The eastbound lanes of West Colonial Drive were shut down for more than an hour after the accident so that crews could clear the scene.
DeBary Man Charged in Connection With Accident That Killed Two
A 19-year-old DeBary man has been charged with two counts of vehicular homicide and one count of reckless driving causing serious injury in connection with a “car surfing” incident. Police say the man was behind the wheel of a 2001 Nissan Xterra when he lost control and threw two passengers riding on the outside. Orlando personal injury attorney James O. Cunningham would like to caution all Florida drivers that it only takes a moment to do something that you’ll regret for the rest of your life, and this sad story is an unfortunate example of this.
New Coalition Organized to Reduce Texting While Driving
Orlando personal injury attorney James O. Cunningham has been hoping that our state will finally pass substantive laws that ban texting and talking on cell phones while driving but has seen one bill after another fail due to a governor’s veto or die in committee. Florida is one of the few remaining states in the country without bans on texting and talking on cell phones while driving, but Mr. Cunningham is hopeful that a new coalition will pressure lawmakers to get a new law passed soon.
Rally Driver Loses Control, Causes 5-Car Crash Near Orlando
A popular rapper and others were at the scene of a recent multi-car accident near Orlando when an Audi R8 lost control and triggered a five-car collision. Accident investigators say that rapper Ice-T was one of many participants in an infamous Las Vegas to Miami road rally called the Bullrun Rally. Named after an illegal cross-country race where drivers sped their cars at reckless speeds across the country to claim a prize, the Bullrun Rally is trying to distance itself from that unsafe and unsavory reputation. It is now marketed as a “lifestyle event” for high-end luxury automobiles from one waypoint to another, usually at speeds well above the posted speed limit. Local police call the rally “a nightmare,” and Orlando personal injury attorney James O. Cunningham would have to agree.
