Eleven Injured in Orlando Church Van Crash

A church van and six other vehicles were involved in an Orlando multiple vehicle accident that sent eleven people to area hospitals Wednesday morning. The crash occurred on West Colonial Drive near Paul Street. One of the victims was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, and the others suffered non-life threatening injuries. The eastbound lanes of West Colonial Drive were shut down for more than an hour after the accident so that crews could clear the scene.

According to Fire Rescue spokeswoman Genevieve Latham, the accident occurred just before 8:44 a.m. Firefighters found the church van on its side with passengers trapped inside. When approaching stopped traffic at the red light on Paul Street, the driver of the van reportedly lost control before veering from the center lane to the right lane and rolling over the top of another vehicle. This caused a chain reaction, and the van collided with five other vehicles. Seven of the eleven accident victims had to be extracted from vehicles. It has been reported that the 15-passenger church van is owned by Florida Mentor, an organization that serves developmentally-disabled children and adults. Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Kim Montes said that charges are pending against the van driver.
