Rally Driver Loses Control, Causes 5-Car Crash Near Orlando
A popular rapper and others were at the scene of a recent multi-car accident near Orlando when an Audi R8 lost control and triggered a five-car collision. Accident investigators say that rapper Ice-T was one of many participants in an infamous Las Vegas to Miami road rally called the Bullrun Rally. Named after an illegal cross-country race where drivers sped their cars at reckless speeds across the country to claim a prize, the Bullrun Rally is trying to distance itself from that unsafe and unsavory reputation. It is now marketed as a “lifestyle event” for high-end luxury automobiles from one waypoint to another, usually at speeds well above the posted speed limit. Local police call the rally “a nightmare,” and Orlando personal injury attorney James O. Cunningham would have to agree.
The annual event costs $20,000 per car and draws celebrities and the wealthy to compete in the risky event, and currently MTV and SPEED TV are both producing television programs based on the rally. The driver of the Audi that lost control and started the chain-reaction accident had been warned in previous days to slow down, and other participants had “told the guy to slow down yesterday.”
The driver of the Audi is a 30-year-old New Jersey man who was arrested on charges of racing on a public highway and reckless driving. The crash occurred on July 15 around 10:25 a.m. in the southbound lanes near mile marker 258 of the Florida Turnpike in Orlando. Florida Highway Patrol troopers report that they had received numerous complaints that the driver was travelling at excessive speeds and were looking for him when he lost control. He then struck a concrete barrier and hit a 2004 Honda before colliding with two other vehicles. FHP accident investigators say that no one was seriously injured in the crash.
