Orlando Man Severely Injured During Crosswalk Accident Involving Two Vehicles
Traffic detectives operating out of Orange County have opened a formal investigation into the near-death of a 25-year-old local resident after he was struck by two separate vehicles early Thursday morning while attempting to cross the street at the intersection of Americana Boulevard and Texas Avenue outside Orlando.
According to preliminary incident reports from the responding officers with the Florida Highway Patrol, it was close to 6:30 a.m. on September 23, 2021, when authorities were dispatched to the scene of a severe pedestrian accident involving a passenger vehicle, a school bus, and a 25-year-old man from Orlando. Video surveillance footage pulled from a business close to the intersection of Texas Avenue and American Boulevard shows the young male stepping out into the designated crosswalk in an attempt to get across the busy street when he was struck by an oncoming sport utility vehicle. After the first point of impact, the pedestrian was then struck by an Oak Ridge High School bus that was traveling in the same direction as the SUV.
Orange County emergency medical teams arrived at the crash site to find the accident victim suffering from serious life-threatening injuries, and once he was stabilized for transportation, he was taken to Orlando Health where he remains in critical but stable condition.
The 34-year-old female driver of the white SUV stayed at the scene and has been charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. No one on the school bus was injured during the collision and all of the students were transferred to another bus after the accident occurred. The principal of Oak Ridge High School, Benjamin Alvarado, alerted parents & guardians of the accident and stated that counselors would be available to the children upon request.
