One Injured, One Killed During Head-On Crash in Deltona
Deputies with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office are currently investigating the death of a 57-year-old driver from Osteen after he was killed during a head-on collision yesterday morning near Clay Court in Deltona.
Early details from the responding officers with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office state that it was approximately 11:54 a.m. on Monday, May 1, 2023, when 57-year-old Osteen resident Shawn Wainwright was driving a black Mitsubishi sport utility vehicle in the northbound direction of East Normandy Boulevard in Deltona. Witnesses interviewed at the scene told authorities that shortly before the SUV reached Clay Court, something caused the driver to start swerving back and forth between the left and center lanes. The Mitsubishi SUV ultimately ended up in the direct path of an oncoming Jeep SUV in the center lane and the two vehicles crashed head-on.
Emergency teams with the Deltona Fire Rescue and the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the scene of the two-vehicle accident and quickly transported the severely-injured 57-year-old Osteen man to the closest hospital. He was unable to survive and passed away a short time afterward.
The driver of the Jeep SUV was extricated by the Deltona Fire Rescue and medevaced to a nearby hospital. He was listed as being in stable condition later in that day.
