Mount Dora Driver Killed During Rear-End Collision with Semi-Truck
Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol are currently investigating the death of a Mount Dora man after he was killed during a collision with a semi-truck last Saturday along U.S. Highway 441 in Marion County.
According to preliminary incident reports from the Florida Highway Patrol operating within Marion County, it was close to 3:15 p.m. on April 22, 2023, when a semi-truck pulling a trailer was traveling in the southbound direction of U.S. Highway 441 in Ocala. It was while the big rig was stopped at a traffic light controlling the intersection of U.S. Highway 441 and NW 77th Street that a man driving a Ford F-150 entered the area from the southern direction.
For reasons that are unknown at this time, the yet-to-be-identified male driver of the pickup truck “did not decelerate to match pace with the slower traffic in front of it” and rear-ended the semi-truck at a speed higher than the posted limit of 50 miles per hour, said the Florida Highway Patrol.
Immediately after the auto accident occurred, the traffic light turned green and the driver of the semi-truck drove away from the scene, initially believing that the big rig had sustained a blown tire. She pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road to inspect the damage and that’s when the 32-year-old Jacksonville woman realized what had actually happened.
Marion County Fire Rescue teams were dispatched to the scene of the pickup vs. semi-truck accident and sadly discovered that the driver of the pickup had sustained severe injuries during the collision. He was pronounced dead by emergency medical teams after being extricated from his vehicle.
