Lake County Rear-End Collision Kills 48-Year-Old Pickup Truck Driver
Investigative authorities with the Florida Highway Patrol operating out of Lake County are currently working to determine the exact cause of a fatal rear-end collision involving a pickup truck and a van along U.S. Highway 27 that claimed the life of a 48-year-old man from Leesburg Friday morning.
According to preliminary findings from the responding officers with the Florida Highway Patrol in Lake County, it was approximately 6:05 a.m. on the first day of October when a 48-year-old Leesburg resident was sitting in his idling pickup truck and waiting at the red traffic light that governs the intersection of U.S. Highway 27 and Lake Minneola Shores. It was while the Leesburg man was waiting for his turn to proceed through the intersection that a 65-year-old woman from Clermont failed to yield for the red light in front of her and violently rear-ended the pickup truck with her van.
Within a matter of minutes after the initial 9-1-1 calls to Lake County dispatchers, emergency response teams arrived at the scene of the accident to find the 48-year-old man suffering from multiple life-threatening injuries. He was immediately removed from his mangled pickup truck and transported by EMTs to the nearest hospital where he sadly passed away shortly upon arrival due to the severity of his injuries. No word on whether or not the 65-year-old Clermont woman sustained any injuries, although troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol did indicate that both drivers were wearing their seatbelts when the fatal collision occurred.
The southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 27 and a portion of the road west of Lake Minneola Shores were closed for several hours while FHP detectives and Lake County accident reconstructionists worked the crash site in order to gather important evidence. Once officials were finished with the scene, cleanup crews were called in and worked feverishly to reopen the typically busy intersection.
