Driver Suffers Medical Episode Shortly Before Flagler County Car Crash
According to official reports from multiple law enforcement agencies in Flagler County, a 63-year-old man passed away Wednesday afternoon after experiencing a medical episode shortly before his vehicle crashed into another motorist near the intersection of Pine Lakes Parkway and Westhampton Drive in Palm Coast.
Collision details from detectives with the Florida Highway Patrol indicate that it was approximately 3:15 p.m. on July 28, 2021, when a 63-year-old local resident was driving a maroon Kia Sorento SUV in the southbound direction down Westhampton Drive. At this same time, a 67-year-old man – also from Palm Coast – was driving a silver Dodge Ram pickup westbound along Pine Lakes Parkway. As the two motorists approached the stop signs governing the intersection, the driver of the Kia failed to yield and crashed into the passenger’s side of the pickup truck before finally coming to a complete stop in a wooded and water-filled roadside ditch.
Emergency response teams from several different departments arrived at the scene of the accident to assist the injured individuals, including officers with the Flagler County Fire Rescue, Palm Coast Fire Department, and the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office. The 63-year-old SUV driver was immediately transported to AdventHealth in Palm Coast but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the medical facility. Further examinations of the victim show that he suffered a heart attack right before the auto accident occurred which more than likely caused the collision in the first place. The 67-year-old driver of the Dodge Ram pickup truck was uninjured in the incident.
As the amount of tourists, vacationers, and residents continues to increase year after year, so have the amount of severe auto accidents that have occurred along Florida’s roadways. Although Flagler County itself has only recorded 7 car crash fatalities since the beginning of the year, this particular branch of the Florida Highway Patrol, which covers 9 counties, responded to three fatal calls in one day.
