Thirty Years Achieved as a Florida Board Certified Civil Trial Specialist
Orlando attorney James O. Cunningham recently renewed his board certification with the Florida Bar as a Civil Trial Specialist. He has been a board certified attorney with the Florida Bar for 30 straight years as a Civil Trial Specialist – a major accomplishment for an attorney. The designation demonstrates Mr. Cunningham’s commitment to the practice of civil trial law and his success at providing quality legal representation for his clients.
Osceola County Officials Announce Plan to Install Red-Light Cameras
Osceola County commissioners recently announced that they plan to install red-light cameras at ten intersections in unincorporated locations of the county. Since Florida lawmakers passed legislation allowing their installation in 2010, red-light cameras have been installed in many locations throughout our state. The devices have already been installed in several locations in Orange County, including the cities of Orlando, Apopka, Edgewood, Groveland, Maitland and Winter Park.
Worker Critically Injured in Fall at Convention Center
Orange County Sheriff’s deputies report that a man was critically injured recently when he fell around 20 feet while setting up a carnival ride at the Orange County Convention Center. The worker, an employee of Freeman Exposition Services, was reportedly working on the ride at an expo at the Convention center when he fell. Deputies are still trying to determine why the worker fell, but the Sheriff’s Office is working with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration on the accident investigation.
Injured Daytona NASCAR Fans Begin Hiring Injury Lawyers
Two racing fans, who were injured by flying debris from a multi-car accident at Daytona International Speedway, recently announced that they have retained legal counsel in preparation for seeking damages in a personal injury lawsuit. The spectacular accident that injured the two fans and at least 26 more occurred on Feb. 23 during the Nationwide Series Drive4COPD 300. The crash occurred on the final curve of the race and involved a dozen racecars. The high-speed impact of the racecars flung debris over a 22-foot-high fence built in 2010. Crash debris also injured spectators through a hole in the fence caused by one of the cars, which crashed into and shredded parts of the fence during the accident.
Highway Safety Official Says Distracted Driving Data Is Unreliable
In a statement that shocked distracted driving attorneys in Orlando, a Florida highway safety official recently told lawmakers that data on how distracted driving affects Florida auto accidents is unreliable. Matthew Montgomery, Legislative Affairs Director for the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, recently told legislators that 2011 distracted driving crash data is flawed due to the way that data is collected after accidents. He said that law enforcement officials have the option to include what type of distraction caused an accident in their reports but are not required to do so. He went on to say that it is impossible to determine whether or not a driver was talking or texting while driving if he or she is killed in an accident.
Guest Attendance and Revenue Up at Universal Orlando
Comcast Corp., parent company of Universal Orlando Resorts and other theme parks across the country, reports that attendance and visitor spending rose in 2012. In a recent statement, Comcast reported that theme park revenue rose 9.9 percent in 2012 from revenue in 2011, from $867 million to $953 million. Comcast cited the surging popularity of Universal Orlando’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter as the single-largest factor of the jump in revenue. The popular attraction opened three years ago and continues to attract throngs of would-be wizards of all ages.
Older Riders More Likely to Be Severely Injured in Motorcycle Accidents
James O. Cunningham and other Orlando motorcycle accident lawyers are alarmed at the findings of a recent study published in the journal Injury Prevention. The study compared the motorcycle accident statistics and severity of injuries of riders over 40 years of age with younger riders and found that older riders are three times more likely than younger riders are to suffer severe injuries in an accident. This is of particular concern to Orlando personal injury attorneys, as an increasing number of older people are purchasing motorcycles and the Orlando metropolitan area, like most of our state, is home to a larger percentage of older people than most states.
Johnson & Johnson Knew About High Failure Rates in Hip Implants
A recent article in the New York Times reports that Johnson & Johnson, parent company of DePuy Orthopaedics, the company that manufactured faulty metal-on-metal hip replacement appliances, knew that the hip devices would fail within five years in nearly 40 percent of patients who had them surgically implanted. According to the article, which cited documents recently disclosed in the upcoming trial for a recipient who filed a lawsuit against DePuy, Johnson & Johnson conducted the internal analysis of the implants shortly after they were recalled. Of particular concern to implant recipients and Orlando personal injury attorneys such as James O. Cunningham is the fact that Johnson & Johnson knew of the high failure rate while it was publicly disputing similar findings conducted by a British implant registry.
Toyota Announces New Recalls Affecting One Million Vehicles
Toyota recall lawyers across the country are closely monitoring developments in the most recent recalls affecting Toyota vehicles. A company that spent decades building a reputation for quality and dependability has experienced some high-profile setbacks in recent years as one recall after another has buffeted the brand. Toyota reports that the most recent recalls involve defective airbags and windshield wiper arms. The automaker is recalling over one million vehicles to address the problems, with the airbag recall affecting more than 752,000 vehicles.
Orlando Police Crack Down on Drivers Who Fail to Yield to Pedestrians
Law enforcement officials in Central Florida are tired of our area’s reputation for pedestrian accidents. More than 8,000 people are injured in pedestrian accidents in our state every year, and regular readers of this blog know that the Orlando metropolitan area is among the most dangerous places for these accidents in the country. Last summer, this blog featured a post about a joint effort between Orlando Police and Orange County Sheriff’s Office called “Operation Best Foot Forward.” When the new program began last June, officers and sheriff’s deputies began handing out warnings to drivers who failed to yield to pedestrians.
