Worker Critically Injured in Fall at Convention Center
Orange County Sheriff’s deputies report that a man was critically injured recently when he fell around 20 feet while setting up a carnival ride at the Orange County Convention Center. The worker, an employee of Freeman Exposition Services, was reportedly working on the ride at an expo at the Convention center when he fell. Deputies are still trying to determine why the worker fell, but the Sheriff’s Office is working with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration on the accident investigation.
A spokesperson for the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions released a statement in connection with the accident. It said:
"Our safety and first aid teams, our security and Orange County Convention Center security, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, as well as the Orlando Fire Department, responded to provide immediate assistance. Our thoughts are with the worker, his family, friends, and co-workers. Safety is the top priority of IAAPA and our Expo. This is the first incident of this nature in our Expo’s long history."
The Sheriff’s Office and OSHA have not yet concluded their investigation into this accident, so there is no way to know whether or not required safety equipment was in place or if the worker was following proper safety procedures at the time of the accident. The only thing for sure at this point is that a worker was very seriously injured and likely faces a long and expensive road to recovery.
If the investigation finds that the worker’s employer failed to provide proper safety equipment or training to the worker, they may be liable for damages to compensate the worker for medical expenses, pain and suffering, loss of income, physical rehabilitation and other accident-related expenses.
