Skateboarder Struck and Killed by SUV at Busy Deltona Intersection
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office has opened an official investigation into the death of a 31-year-old man from Deltona, Florida after he was struck by a black SUV while standing at a busy intersection at North Normandy Boulevard on the evening of Wednesday, February 24th, 2021.
According to the preliminary collision information provided by Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the scene of the fatal accident located at the intersection of Merrimac Street and North Normandy Boulevard shortly before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night. Since this area of Deltona is heavily-trafficked by both vehicles and pedestrians, there were a few eye-witnesses at the crash site and their accounts of the incident were retrieved by authorities in order to gather the full scope of the accident. Their recollections indicated that 31-year-old John Ramos, a Deltona resident, was standing along the roadway with a skateboard and was leaning over an unknown object when a black 2015 Nissan Rogue entered from the south on North Normandy Boulevard and struck the young man as he was standing back up.
Bystanders who were in the area at the time of the accident immediately rushed to the pedestrian’s aid and started performing CPR until emergency medical teams with the Deltona Fire Rescue arrived at the crash site and relieved them. Mr. Ramos was medevaced by helicopter to Sanford’s Central Florida Regional Hospital where, despite their best efforts, doctors were unable to further sustain the victim’s life and he passed away early Thursday morning.
Neither the driver nor passenger inside the Nissan Rogue were injured in the accident and they were released from the scene by local officials. Depending on the toxicology results, both individuals may face charges in the future.
The homicide unit of the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is spearheading the investigation into the exact cause of this deadly pedestrian accident. No further information is available to the public at this time.
