Pedestrian Dies After Being Struck by Multiple Cars in Orlando
An investigation remains ongoing into the death of a pedestrian who was struck by at least two different vehicles while attempting to cross an Orlando road. What is currently known about the incident comes from reports filed by the Florida Highway Patrol. These reports indicated that the event took place during the night on Monday, January 11th, sometime around 9:00 p.m.
When the event first began, on the night of the 11th, a 54-year-old Orlando resident was on foot and walking along the side of the road within Orange County. It is not clear exactly where the resident began walking, but we do know that they eventually made their way to Sand Lake Road, close to where this road intersects with Voltaire Drive. At this time, the pedestrian decided to attempt to leave the side of the road and cross the street. The area where they chose to perform this action is reportedly devoid of any pedestrian safety features such as a crosswalk, flashing lights, or even a stoplight that controls traffic. As a result, it appears that the place where the pedestrian chose to begin their journey across the street was not one that was really equipped for such a maneuver.
It was shortly after 9:00 p.m. when the pedestrian began crossing the road. At this time, a 17-year-old Orlando resident was driving their car down Sand Lake Road when they reached this same location. The driver of this car apparently failed to notice the pedestrian and struck them with their car while still traveling at an advanced rate of speed. While this driver was stopped and alerting emergency medical teams, a second car, being driven by a 60-year-old individual, approached the scene and also struck the now prone pedestrian. This driver remained at the scene as well.
Authorities have reason to believe that additional vehicles may have passed through the area, struck the pedestrian and then departed, although they have not provided any specific reason for this suspicion.
When medical teams reached the scene, there was nothing that could be done for the pedestrian. This person was declared dead at the scene of the crash.
Police are continuing their investigation into the incident and are asking that anyone who holds any information regarding the event contact the authorities immediately.
